As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but sing praises for ABC’s High Potential. The show boasts an exceptional ensemble cast, with Kaitlin Olson brilliantly portraying Morgan, a remarkable single mother whose exceptional intellect and skills land her a consulting role with the police force. Her on-screen chemistry with detective Karadec (played by Daniel Sunjata) is captivating, as is her warm friendship and professional bond with Captain Selena (Judy Reyes). The dynamics between Morgan and her family members, including her children and ex-husband, are also compelling. However, a recent episode introduced a guest star whose brief appearance left viewers yearning for more!
In the investigation they were conducting, he played a part, though not as they initially expected. Upon unmasking his identity, it became evident that he had previous connections with Karadec and several other officers in the department. His presence left an impact, and many supporters hope for his return.
Who Is Chuck Lavoie?
In episode 10 titled “Slides and Tragedy,” Morgan and Karadec are investigating the gruesome demise of a nanny named Tara (Kate Boyer). The lifeless body of Tara was discovered within a closed playground slide at a local park. She appeared to have suffered a severe head injury, and it seems she entered the slide after being struck, eventually succumbing to her wounds in that location.
While conversing with the couple where Tara was employed, they uncovered not just the fact that she had been subjected to harmful comments online, but also that she had informed her workplace about a peculiar man with a limp stalking her. By piecing together various hints, they eventually traced him through a French newspaper he’s known to read, and found him purchasing the morning paper from the sole street vendor in town who sells it.
When Karadec trails the hat-wearing man into a building and notices the sign on the door, he releases a sigh. It turns out this isn’t a killer, but someone familiar to him. He informs Morgan that it’s alright for her to proceed (she had defied his instructions by climbing the stairs earlier) and advises her that this individual is quite a character, or “a lot,” as he puts it.
It transpires that Chuck (Ken Marino), who once collaborated with Karadec and numerous other officers in the police department, had to quit due to an injury he sustained. Interestingly, while attempting to disguise his self-inflicted foot wound with elaborate terminology, he is outsmarted by Morgan, who swiftly deduces the truth. Consequently, unable to perform his duties anymore, Chuck launched a private investigative agency. He was tasked to trail Tara and examine allegations about her behavior towards the couple’s child, ensuring she wasn’t abusing them.
Despite his connection to the case, it was Chuck’s behavior, character, and the responses he elicited from others that left fans laughing out loud.
Why Fans Want Chuck Back
It seems that Chuck has a similar effect on Karadec as Morgan did earlier, causing annoyance. This is due to his peculiar personality, which not only bothered Karadec, but others too. Upon discovering that Chuck had taken numerous photos of Tara during the investigation, Karadec requested him to bring those images into the office the following day since they could potentially reveal who murdered her. However, instead of simply dropping off the flash drive, Chuck wanted to catch up with his former colleagues and contribute to the ongoing investigation.
Each time he attempts to socialize with others, they quickly find reasons to back out or evade him. Initially, like Oz (Deniz Akdeniz) and Daphne (Jacivia Leslie), having a disagreement about checking the victim’s phone, when Chuck shows up with the flash drive and tries to get close to Oz, Daphne swiftly takes the phone and volunteers to do it, merely to distance herself from him. He appears oblivious to the fact that his company is not appreciated by others; he’s a cheerful individual who enjoys assisting, and seems to genuinely crave everyone’s companionship.
Chuck Can Provide Additional Comic Relief
As a fervent admirer, I believe introducing Chuck into our workspace would bring an exhilarating dynamism that we all could use. Morgan complements Karadec wonderfully, but imagine the spice Chuck could add, stirring up the same bewilderment in others that Karadec experiences when Morgan bends the rules? It’s a captivating thought! The team admires and enjoys Morgan’s company, but there seems to be an invisible force field surrounding Chuck, making everyone steer clear of him.
It seems a bit unexpected, but Chuck appears to be genuinely content with his peculiarities. Intriguingly, the comedic vibe he brought to this TV show episode was strangely refreshing. Despite being classified as a crime drama, High Potential skillfully straddles the line between drama and comedy, making it one of the most impressive new comedy series in 2024. However, it’s usually Morgan who shoulders the majority of the comedy. Chuck is another character who could inject some comedic relief into the office setting, even when Morgan isn’t present.
Incorporating more humorous elements could be beneficial, especially considering the intensifying main plotlines such as Morgan’s quest for her long-lost first husband. As she delves further into this storyline, her knack for comedic moments may gradually diminish. However, despite being an eccentric character, there’s a peculiar charm about Chuck that mirrors Morgan’s, making him someone you’d enjoy talking to, albeit in modest quantities.
In simpler terms, the plot could involve him frequently appearing in similar cases that the main characters are handling. This could be due to his past as a police officer and current role as a private investigator, or because he had previous dealings with either the victim or suspect in a specific case. Fans eagerly anticipate this character’s return to the series.
