Saturday Night Live (SNL) has gone all out for its 50th anniversary celebration, leading up to the SNL50: The Anniversary Special gracing our screens in 2025. This three-hour extravaganza showcased five decades of SNL’s comedic legacy and saw the return of several beloved faces from past cast members as well as Steven Spielberg. However, some prominent figures were conspicuously missing, causing a stir among fans. For example, many wondered why Bill Hader wasn’t present, but it seems there was a valid explanation behind his and Dana Carvey’s unavailability.
Why Bill Hader Didn’t Come Back
From 2005 to 2013, Hader was a well-known cast member at Studio 8H and has continued to make frequent appearances since then, both as host and in brief roles. He’s particularly adored by fans for his cherished character Stefon. Despite joining a Volkswagen commercial with former colleagues Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen to reprise “The Californians,” Hader missed the anniversary special due to a longstanding scheduling conflict, as confirmed by his representative to Variety.
Although it was unfortunate not to see Hader in the anniversary special, given the circumstances, it’s understandable. It seems that scheduling conflicts can be unavoidable, particularly when it appears that whatever other commitments Hader had were already scheduled well before NBC finalized its airdate for the anniversary special.
In the very least, the Volkswagen ad was quite amusing and offered a brief moment of humor from Bill Hader. The “Californians” sketch, undeniably one of the funniest from Saturday Night Live’s extensive history, is still remembered fondly, and Hader’s appearance in it was eagerly awaited. However, it’s worth noting that Hader wasn’t the sole former cast member who didn’t appear in the special.
Why Dana Carvey Didn’t Come Back
It came as quite a surprise that Dana Carvey, the famous comedian who graced Saturday Night Live from 1986 to 1993 and has returned multiple times since, including four hosting stints, was not present for the anniversary special despite making a comeback at the start of Season 50 as President Joe Biden. However, his absence wasn’t due to scheduling conflicts; he had a valid reason instead.
According to reports, Carvey was reportedly under the weather with a severe cold and unfortunately couldn’t attend the SNL50: The Anniversary Special. Just like setting appointments, nobody can control when they fall ill, especially during winter months. It’s unfortunate, but fans were fortunate enough to enjoy Carvey’s performances at the start of the season. It wouldn’t be unexpected if he returned for another appearance before the end of Season 50, perhaps as Biden or one of his other beloved characters.
Despite the fact that not everyone could participate in the anniversary special, it was still filled with familiar faces and unforgettable moments. Streaming on Peacock, SNL50: The Anniversary Special brought back beloved characters, honored past cast members, featured top-notch musical acts, and even had Weekend Update reunite former anchors Seth Meyers and Bill Murray.
As SNL keeps inviting former cast members not just for special episodes, but also as hosts or cameos, it’s hoped that stars like Hader and Carvey, along with any other alums who couldn’t make an appearance yet, will have the chance to return and rectify their past absences.
