As a die-hard Potterhead who has grown up with the magical world of Hogwarts, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness upon hearing the latest news about the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The idea of delving deeper into this enchanting universe was always an exciting prospect, and I had eagerly awaited each new installment.
In a world filled with well-known franchises, The Wizarding World stands out uniquely. Originating from J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books, it has expanded into theme parks, stage productions, and films (now available on Max streaming service). However, the recent underperformance at the box office of “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” has left fans questioning if the remaining two installments in the spinoff series will ever be made. The franchise’s lead actress, Katherine Waterson, shares her candid opinions on the matter, leaving me contemplative about its future.
Information regarding the forthcoming Harry Potter series is scarce, yet there’s a growing concern that the studio may have stopped working on the Fantastic Beasts franchise. This was hinted when actress Katherine Waterson, who portrayed Tina Goldstein in all three films, spoke to NME about the magical spinoff, expressing disappointment as she said:
I think that ship has sailed.
It’s not me who is emotional, but you seem to be. Honestly, I must admit that the news about the potential conclusion of the Fantastic Beasts series feels quite disappointing. Although the Fantastic Beasts movies didn’t reach the same level of success as the Harry Potter films, they were initially planned as a five-part story. With only three movies released so far, it leaves us uncertain if we’ll ever find answers to the many questions that arose after watching The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Initially, the first “Fantastic Beasts” film was successful, but neither of its follow-ups failed to capture the same level of box office and critical acclaim. Considering the substantial production costs, particularly for “The Secrets of Dumbledore,” which was filmed during a pandemic, it appears Warner Bros. might have decided to limit their losses. I must admit, I’m quite disappointed.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but speculate about the narrative directions the next two Fantastic Beasts films might take, should Warner Bros. decide to proceed with them. The intricate tale between Dumbledore and Grindelwald unfolds as their complex history as lovers is revealed, adding depth to their fierce conflict. The second film, The Crimes of Grindelwald, introduced Nagini as a human character, but her whereabouts in the last movie left fans curious about her transformation into one of Voldemort’s horcruxes – a storyline that I eagerly anticipate seeing developed further.
It appears Waterson’s remarks suggest that the Fantastic Beasts series may have reached its end. Similar doubts were expressed by Jude Law regarding his return as Young Dumbledore. However, it’s possible that books or other media could still be released, offering insight into what might have transpired in the remaining chapters.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement for the upcoming Harry Potter series airing on Max. Each season promises to delve deep into one of J.K. Rowling’s books, allowing for more screen time to explore aspects from the novels that were left out in the films. Plus, we can’t wait to find out who will be stepping into the iconic roles!
The Harry Potter franchise is streaming on Max. Check the 2025 movie release dates.
