Prior to the launch of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, Jeremy Slater acknowledged the disappointing performance of the previous Marvel team’s film, “Fantastic Four“. He attributed its failure to a mix of contrasting creative ideas and budget adjustments. The movie featured Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Michael B. Jordan. Despite boasting a well-known roster of Marvel characters, “Fantastic Four” could only garner a global revenue of $167.8 million, while its production budget was $120 million (according to Box Office Mojo). Beyond financial losses, it also fell flat with critics, securing a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Lately, Slater had a chat with ComicBook.com, where he discussed how the movie’s contradictory hints may have contributed to its downfall.
To put it simply, The Avengers served as my primary inspiration due to its release around that time – either the same year or the previous one. I was completely captivated by it. I found Joss Whedon’s work on the movie remarkable for managing such a diverse range of tones. Even now, recalling the moment when Thor spun his hammer and flew into the sky in the theater, I can’t help but make an excited noise. It was a childhood favorite that I never imagined would be brought to life like this.
I exclaimed, “Observe — the public adores this film, and its box office figures are proof enough. I believe we can create something comparable in terms of grandeur and spectacular action sequences. Yet, it’s crucial that we don’t overlook the essence of that film, which is the relationships. It’s about Natasha soothing Bruce, Clint joining the team, and Captain America and Iron Man clashing heads. That’s what makes the movie successful — you connect with the characters and their interactions. This has always been our guiding principle. ‘If we could replicate what Marvel is doing now, this is evidently what audiences crave in a comic book film.’
Essentially, our perspectives on movies were quite disparate. I’m more into superhero films like The Avengers, while he seemed to prefer darker, grounded ones like Batman Begins. Since I grew up appreciating comics and loving The Avengers, it resonated deeply with me, but it didn’t seem to have the same impact on him because we don’t share those common experiences. Additionally, creating a movie of that scale, such as The Avengers, was incredibly challenging due to budget constraints. I believe my script and vision for the film were more aligned with the initial phase of what Avengers represented at the time compared to other productions.
