Fantastic Four Director on Why First Steps’ Plot Wouldn’t Have Worked on Earth-616

Matt Shakman recently discussed why The Fantastic Four: First Steps is being set within the MCU’s multiverse, specifically on Earth-828, rather than the main timeline. In a recent interview, the director explained that by placing Marvel’s First Family on another Earth, they can avoid significant continuity problems. Additionally, he mentioned that the multiverse setting provides a unique and engaging starting point for both new and longstanding fans.

Fantastic Four’s Earth-616 setting would’ve created unanswerable questions

During an interview with ScreenRant, Shakman discussed the setting for The Fantastic Four: First Steps and pointed out, “Given they’re such public figures, it wouldn’t make sense for them to be casually present in the MCU timeline during the ’60s. Where did they go when Thanos attacked? What about Loki’s assault? Their absence from significant MCU events would create challenging questions, so having them reside in a separate universe seemed necessary.

Shakman pointed out that by placing the movie in a different realm, it offers fresh beginners an inviting entry point, as he put it, “The water’s warm, come on in if you haven’t heard about Marvel before.” He also mentioned that veteran fans would still recognize links to the larger universe. “Later on, these characters will intertwine with other heroes of the MCU and become part of the main narrative,” he added for clarity.

In this method, The Multiverse Saga’s grand scheme is consistent with its examination of various realities. By making the Fantastic Four’s tale independent, Marvel prevents any plot inconsistencies from earlier events and lets the movie thrive independently within Phase 6. Shakman underlined that some viewers might find it challenging to catch up on previous Marvel films, expressing his concern as, “There are people who thought, ‘Oh dear, I’m not fully updated on Marvel.’

In “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” we find the team already assembled, bypassing their initial formation. According to Shakman, this structure offers a straightforward starting point for newcomers and paves the way for potential cross-universe appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Matt Shakman takes the helm for this movie, while Jeff Kaplan, Josh Friedman, Ian Springer, and Eric Pearson work on the screenplay. The release date is scheduled for July 25, 2025 in cinemas.
