As a movie enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of various superhero franchises over the past few decades, I find myself eagerly anticipating Marvel Studios’ upcoming release, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“. The last time we saw this iconic team on the big screen was in 2007, a lifetime ago in terms of cinematic storytelling.
Stepping away from the buzz surrounding James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, it’s easy to overlook the exciting Marvel Studios projects slated for 2025. One such project is none other than The Fantastic Four, whose fresh take on Marvel’s First Family was recently showcased at Disney Celebra in Argentina. A recently shared piece of art offers the most compelling sneak peek yet into what the new version of this iconic quartet will appear like when they grace our screens next year.
Lately, there seems to be a peculiar quietness surrounding Marvel Studios, even with a series of major releases looming ahead that could potentially determine the fate of this billion-dollar franchise. Following a string of underwhelming box office performances from 2021 to 2023, only Deadpool & Wolverine managed to represent the Marvel Cinatic Universe (MCU) on the global stage – and their performance was nothing short of heroic. Now, the real challenge begins for Kevin Feige and his team, as they strive to restore the franchise to its former glory, similar to the momentum it had seven years ago before the launch of Avengers: Infinity War.
First on the schedule for release in February is “Captain America: Brave New World,” which has traded spots with “Fantastic Four.” Additionally, “Thunderbolts” is set for a May release. However, it’s the July debut of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” that promises to be the most significant indicator of Marvel Studios’ box office impact, especially as it follows closely after DCU’s “Superman.” Although there’s yet to be a peek at the film’s trailer, fans can start forming their expectations for the Fantastic Four team when they grace the silver screen next year.
Fantastic Four: First Steps is Attempting to Erase the Past
The upcoming movie is the fourth portrayal of the Fantastic Four, a significant adaptation. Although the ’90s film has garnered cult popularity for its budget-friendly and jovial interpretation of the comic book squad, it was in the early 2000s that many audiences were first introduced to the Fantastic Four through Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, and Michael Chiklis, who played the roles in a 2005 film and its sequel in 2007. The franchise went quiet after that, until 2015 when Fox introduced a new take with Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell as the team members, resulting in one of the most disappointing superhero movies ever made.
Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Vanessa Kirby, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are set to bring the MCU’s renditions of Reed Richards, Johnny Storm, Susan Storm, and Ben Grimm to life. Their initial journey, according to reports, won’t unfold within the MCU, but it’s speculated that by the film’s end, their group will be drawn into the main Marvel narrative after a confrontation with Galactus. Additionally, there are expectations that we’ll catch a glimpse of Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom for the first time in this movie.
There is plenty of ground left to cover before we can judge how well the Fantastic Four will perform in their debut under Marvel Studios, and whether they’ll outshine their earlier versions. Fingers crossed that, following James Gunn’s successful showcase of the DCU, Kevin Feige won’t lag behind in unveiling Marvel Studios’ contender for box office dominance.
