Mr. Fantastic and his family have returned to the large movie screens, but this time they’re under the management of Marvel Studios rather than 20th Century Fox.
In a crucial success for Marvel Studios under Kevin Feige and the Fantastic Four franchise, Matt Shakman’s “Fantastic Four: First Steps” achieved a record-breaking global opening of $218 million, with $118 million earned domestically and $100 million overseas. This is just slightly short of DC’s recent $220 million global box office debut for Superman, one of the most iconic comic book heroes alongside Spider-Man and Batman.
The Fantastic Four movie surpassed domestic expectations when it opened, despite early predictions suggesting a range of $120 million to $25 million following an impressive opening day gross of $57 million. However, lower-than-anticipated attendance on Saturday modified these projections. The figures might adjust again by Monday.
The initial success of “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” a film that’s garnering praise from both critics and viewers, is certainly good news for Marvel, now under Disney’s ownership. For Feige and his team, who have had a challenging period (with Deadpool and Wolverine being the exceptions), this could be a step towards redemption. Excluding Deadpool 3, the Fantastic Four reboot has one of the strongest domestic openings for Marvel in several years, surpassed only by Deadpool.
The movie was the 37th Marvel Cinematic Universe film to debut at number one, and it also helped Disney become the first Hollywood studio to surpass $3 billion in global box office revenue in 2025.
The film ranked first on its opening weekend, making it the 37th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to do so. Additionally, it contributed to Disney achieving a record-breaking milestone by becoming the first studio in Hollywood history to reach $3 billion in worldwide ticket sales in 2025.
In the movie “First Steps,” set in New York City and garnering praise for its 1960s throwback aesthetic, Pedro Pascal plays Reed Richards, a brilliant scientist. Accompanied by his wife Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), her brother Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and their loyal friend Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), they embark on an expedition into space. While traveling, their spaceship gets caught in a cosmic storm, which changes their genetic makeup upon their return to Earth, bestowing them with extraordinary abilities.
The fresh movie continues with the quartet basking in their global hero status, but there’s no moment for celebration. They are compelled to journey back into space, as Earth encounters an unexpected visitor – the Silver Surfer (portrayed by Julia Garner). She delivers a grim message: our planet is threatened by a colossal entity known as Galactus and its impending destruction.
The aim is that the movie Fantastic Four will appeal to both families and dedicated fans, potentially countering any ongoing tiredness towards superhero films at the box office. It’s garnering positive feedback from cinema-goers, with an A- CinemaScore, excellent ratings on PostTrak, and a 93% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes (much like Superman).
In The Fantastic Four: First Steps, there’s a simplistic yet appealing vibe that hints at Marvel learning from its past box office disappointments. This new approach seems to value character development over the typical onslaught of identical CGI action scenes. Instead, it offers characters we can connect with,” according to David Rooney, chief film critic for The Hollywood Reporter, in his review.
In other locations, the movie “Superman” surpassed $500 million within the U.S. during its third release. It performed well even after giving up Imax screens to “Fantastic Four,” earning $24.9 million domestically and $19.8 million internationally. This added up to a domestic total of $289.5 million and an international total of $213.2 million by the end of Sunday.
Universal and Amblin’s “Jurassic World: Rebirth” is likewise marking its achievement. It collected $13 million during its fourth weekend, surpassing the $300 million milestone domestically, having cleared the $600 million threshold worldwide a week prior.
More to come.
