Fantastic Four: Marvel Fans Celebrate 'Comics Accurate' The Thing

As a movie enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic journey under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation regarding Marvel’s upcoming adaptation of the Fantastic Four, titled “Fantastic Four: First Steps.” The leaked production photo has certainly eased some concerns, but let’s not forget the rocky past these iconic characters have had on the big screen.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast eagerly awaiting the arrival of Marvel’s original crew, the Fantastic Four, in their upcoming MCU debut titled “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” I must admit that there’s been a fair share of apprehension among us fans. However, the recently leaked production photo has managed to alleviate some of those concerns. The Fantastic Four have had quite the cinematic journey with their big-screen adaptations, and it’s safe to say they haven’t always sailed smoothly.

If Ebon Moss-Bachrach is the one wearing the bulky and presumably heavy costume during filming, it would undoubtedly be a physically demanding task for him throughout production. Despite not sharing much about his preparation process for the role, it was disclosed after the casting announcement that Moss-Bachrach has been conducting unique research for the character. In addition to reading the comics, he mentioned:

“I’m portraying the character Ben Grimm, who transforms into ‘The Thing,’ a man made of stone. To prepare for this role, I’ve been spending quite a bit of time studying and observing different types of rocks.”

Fantastic Four: First Steps Is Set in an Alternate Universe

Although Marvel enthusiasts are generally elated, a hint of discontent lingers within the community. Despite the intrigue generated by the trailer for “Fantastic Four: First Steps”, some fans express dissatisfaction because it is set in an alternate universe separate from the primary Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) timeline. The film is situated in a retro-futuristic 1960s, featuring the iconic Fantasticar, and promises to introduce several of the family’s infamous adversaries into the MCU. Many speculate that the conclusion of “Fantastic Four: First Steps” will involve the family transitioning into the main MCU narrative.

Although some viewers might feel annoyed by the film’s distinct timeline, it offers Marvel Studios an exceptional opportunity to innovate. With First Steps, there’s no need to adhere to any previous MCU storylines. This freedom allows director Matt Shakman to faithfully depict a comic-book version of the Fantastic Four and Galactus on the big screen, without concerns about their impact on the broader MCU narrative.

Fantastic Four: First Steps
is scheduled to hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
