WARNING! SPOILERS ahead for FBI: International season 4, epiosde 22, “Gaijin.”
As I reflect on my review of Wes Mitchell’s (Jesse Lee Soffer) swan song in FBI: International season 4, episode 22, titled “Gaijin,” I find myself a tad disappointed. The series finale, regrettably, fails to deliver a satisfying conclusion, leaving numerous character arcs unresolved.
In “Gaijin,” the narrative primarily revolves around Wes, who embarks on a mission to Tokyo in pursuit of a serial killer, while his team remains stationed in Budapest to provide him with necessary intel. The episode, however, falls short in providing a satisfactory ending for FBI: International.
2025 saw CBS deciding not to renew “FBI: International,” meaning it won’t be back on our screens. It’s regrettable, given that the finale deviated significantly from the series’ typical format, with a heavy emphasis on the character of Wes leading to an inconsistent conclusion. However, this unique setup hinted at the immense potential that was lost with the series’ conclusion, as it demonstrated how differently engaging and intriguing the procedural could have been.
FBI: International Season 4 Finale Marks The First Fly Team Case Beyond Europe
It Should Have Included The Entire Team But Is Still An Important Change
As a film enthusiast, I’ve always found “FBI: International” captivating, especially with its focus on European cases. However, during season 4, something intriguing happened. The team started working closely with Smitty (Eva Jane Willis), our connection to Europol, which broadened their investigation reach across the continent. We’d frequently hop on a train from Budapest to the crime scene, and the narrative often revolved around frictions between our Fly Team and local law enforcement.
While this structure was engaging, it sometimes felt like a bit of a misnomer that the series was called “FBI: International,” as it never ventured beyond Europe’s borders.
In the final episode of FBI: International, things took a turn when Wes found himself venturing solo while the rest remained in Budapest. The shift to Japan as the setting provided a new, engaging twist for the case. Moreover, Wes was tasked with solving a mystery that required navigating cultural differences distinct from those he’s accustomed to in Europe, which added an intriguing layer to the storyline. Unfortunately, it seems there won’t be any more tales exploring cases beyond European borders, which is a real shame as these aspects made the narrative truly unique.
FBI: International Could Have Had More Diversity In Its Settings
There Was No Real Reason It Had To Stay In Europe
Even though FBI: International primarily operated out of Budapest, there was no necessity for it to remain confined within European boundaries. Similar to FBI: Most Wanted and Criminal Minds, FBI: International could have adopted a travel-based approach, allowing the Fly Team to solve cases across the globe. Such a setup would have added intrigue to the show; not only would it have represented a globally dispersed team, but it also would have necessitated the characters to engage with diverse cultures during its run.
Unfortunately, the FBI: International team only explored territories beyond Europe once, which turned out to be their final venture. It appears they aimed to end the series with an exciting case, but it’s unfortunate that there weren’t more cases like this scattered throughout the series. The high cost and logistical challenges of filming on location would have made it financially impracticable, which is a pity as it could have elevated the series significantly. It’s regrettable that they couldn’t find a way to manage these obstacles, as it would have made for a more impactful and memorable show.
