FBI’s John Boyd Reveals What Scola Needs in a New Partner After Tiff’s Departure!

In 2025, CBS will bring back FBI Season 7, with the first episode since the fall finale, which put OA (Zeeko Zaki) in a tough spot. The winter premiere, titled “Descent,” is scheduled for January 28, and it focuses on Scola (John Boyd), as the case of the week stirs up memories of his brother’s death from over two decades ago.

Indeed, as of now, Scola hasn’t found a permanent companion following Tiff’s (Katherine Renee Kane) departure during the premiere. However, a fresh casting hints that he could potentially find a stable match this season. Recently, Boyd shared with TopMob what Scola is looking for in a partner.

FBI’s Newest Agent

According to Deadline, Emily Alabi is set to join the FBI team as a new agent, likely partnered with Scola. Alabi has previous experience with CBS, having recurred on SWAT and appeared in Magnum P.I., which moved to NBC. She also played a role in FBI: International and Joe Pickett (available for Paramount+ subscribers).

Details are scarce about Alabi’s character, although the actress confirmed her casting on Instagram. She will recur through the back half of Season 7, with the potential for promotion to series regular status for Season 8. FBI has already been renewed through Season 9.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I recently learned that the actress who was initially chosen to play Scola’s new partner in the upcoming season has been replaced. Apparently, this decision wasn’t due to any flawed performance by Lisette Olivera, but rather the FBI team opting for a different course. It’s unclear at this point how Agent Sydney Ortiz’s character will be handled, but I suspect we’ll find out once Season 7 resumes.

What John Boyd Told Us About A New Partner For Scola

It was announced during summer that Katherine Renee Kane would not continue as a regular on FBI for Season 7, but she did reappear in the premiere to give Tiff a fitting farewell. The heartwarming final scene between Tiff and Maggie was a request from Missy Peregrym, while Tiff’s last scene with Scola depicted her saving his life after he was wounded in the field.

In that moment, John Boyd described the decision for their last scene together as the “most apparent choice of action,” and verified that scheduling aligned perfectly for it to be his final scene alongside Katherine Renee Kane. Consequently, the stage was left for Scola to seek a new partner, but none have fit quite as seamlessly as Tiff did.

As I chatted with Boyd before the upcoming winter premiere, I was curious about the type of character dynamics he believes would suit Scola best within the FBI context. He graciously offered his insights:

Scola has the ability to connect with everyone, but only when he develops affection. He’s cautious about trusting others, viewing them as less than genuine. However, I believe what makes for an intriguing narrative is introducing a partner who Scola doesn’t expect yet needs. These are the stories that reveal unexpected sides of him. A character who pushes his limits, teaches him, and whom he can learn from would be ideal. In this show, trust is essential; therefore, it’s crucial to have a partner with whom you feel a strong sense of trust. Building that trust back again will make for an exciting journey in the future.

I had a conversation with the actor who reached a significant point during Season 7, before it was announced that Emily Alabi would join the cast. It’s intriguing to speculate how her character will compare (or contrast) with his initial description of Scola’s ideal partner. Even if they don’t instantly connect, it’s worth recalling that Tiff and Scola didn’t have the immediate bond of trust that OA/Maggie shared from the outset. As John Boyd pointed out, building their relationship and trust took time for Tiff and Scola in the past.

In the initial season of FBI, Scola’s character has been consistently developed in a shared narrative with showrunner Mike Weiss. The forthcoming significant episode for this character is penned by Aaron Ginsburg, who joined Season 7. Boyd expressed positive sentiments about the show’s direction with new talent steering the production, stating:

This season, Scola’s storylines have been absolutely captivating! I must admit, I’ve been utterly enthralled by their creative writing. The partnership dynamics, speed dating scenes, and the subplots about people not working, along with the Goldilocks element, have all kept me on the edge of my seat! It’s been a real joy to experience everything they’ve come up with.

The upcoming events for FBI’s character Scola are quickly approaching! Tune into CBS on Tuesday, January 28 at the regular 8 p.m. ET time slot for the Season 7 winter premiere of “Descent.” In this episode, the team will delve into the death of an assistant U.S. attorney, which uncovers a dangerous terrorist plot involving commercial airplanes. Given his past, Scola’s late brother’s memory may resurface in light of these events.

In the upcoming episodes, Scola won’t have Tiff by his side anymore, and it’s uncertain if Syd will step in. However, Shantel VanSanten from FBI: Most Wanted is joining the cast as Nina Chase. It’s hoped that Nina can provide the assistance Scola requires, but viewers will have to watch to find out. Currently, all seasons of FBI, FBI: Most Wanted, and FBI: International are available for streaming on Paramount+.
