Ferdi Porsche’s FAT Teams Up with Rob Smedley to Democratize Professional Racing

As a seasoned motorsport enthusiast with a soft spot for the underdog, I am absolutely thrilled about the FAT Karting League (FKL). Having spent countless hours watching races and dreaming of being behind the wheel, I can’t help but feel a sense of renewed hope and excitement.

The world of racing is poised for a change with the debut of the FAT Karting League (FKL), a collaboration between Ferdinand “Ferdi” Porsche’s FAT International and the Smedley Group, which was founded by ex-Formula 1 engineer Rob Smedley. Originating from the Global Karting League (GKL), the FKL intends to shatter conventional motorsport boundaries, making it feasible and attainable for aspiring racers from a variety of cultural backgrounds, regardless of their financial resources.

As I chat with TopMob, I share my thoughts about motorsport: “Traditionally, it’s been perceived as an exclusive domain for the privileged, old, white males. But FKL is shaking things up. It’s accessible, inclusive, and pulsating with energy – exactly what this sport has been needing.

As an enthusiast, I’ve always been drawn to the thrill and excitement of traditional motorsports. However, it’s no secret that these sports carry hefty price tags, with families often having to shell out hundreds of thousands just to get their kids into the competitive arena. That’s why I’m excited about the FKL – a game-changer in the world of racing. It’s been reported that they’re aiming to overthrow the status quo by reducing costs for participants by an astounding 96%. This is music to my ears, as it means more people like me can afford to participate and enjoy the rush of motorsports!

According to Smedley, families used to spend as much as $250,000 annually just to have a chance. Now, we’ve managed to make a whole season cost less than $5,000. This is truly a significant change.

The FKL accomplishes this by blending cutting-edge engineering with a fresh operational strategy. Instead of families purchasing and maintaining go-karts, the league offers top-tier electric karts on a “show up and drive” basis. This method eliminates the need for initial investment, creating fairness among participants and enabling young talents to concentrate more on honing their abilities.

“We’ve created a system that prioritizes talent over finances.” – Rob Smedley

The heart of the FKL lies in its electric go-karts, innovatively designed and crafted by Smedley’s team. Swapping out conventional internal combustion engines for electric powertrains brings about cost savings and equips everyone with similar gear. Each kart is carefully tailored to ensure a level playing field, emphasizing driver skill over the advantage of advanced machinery. Porsche elaborated that these go-karts are built using Formula One know-how, underscoring their ability to offer young drivers valuable professional experience without the hefty price tag associated with it.

Currently, there are three categories of go-karts designed for various age groups available. Speeds vary from 25 mph for younger racers all the way up to 65 mph for more experienced competitors. Although they come at a reasonable price, these karts maintain the sensation and performance characteristics of conventional racing karts. As Smedley stated, “We’ve specifically designed the power delivery to mimic that of internal combustion engines.” This means that young racers get an authentic racing experience.

The FKL’s commitment to diversity is already evident in its pilot hub in the UK, where female participation has reached 35 percent — a significant leap compared to the 5 percent seen in traditional leagues. Notably, Porsche shared that he’s confident the first female F1 champ will come from the FKL, expressing that “It’s inevitable when you create a system that gives everyone a fair shot.”

To create an exceptionally forward-thinking platform, the league employs advanced data analysis techniques to assess driver skills. Leveraging Smedley’s extensive Formula One background, this tool monitors every facet of a driver’s performance, including cornering speeds and braking accuracy. This system offers unbiased information to pinpoint and cultivate promising drivers. In essence, our data-informed approach removes the element of uncertainty from talent identification, paving the way for the most deserving drivers to be acknowledged and backed.

The pinnacle of the league’s accomplishments is the distinctive award: a fully financed spot on FAT International’s Formula 4 team. This gives the top driver from the FKL an immediate route into professional motor racing — a fresh, enticing chance in entry-level racing. It’s worth noting that the FKL’s aspirations don’t end with affordability and inclusivity. In January 2025, the league will reintroduce its UK base, which will serve as the starting point for its European ventures. By mid-2025, the FKL plans to extend to the U.S., opening two bases, signifying the initial move in a worldwide expansion strategy.

Smedley outlined that the aim is to expand into 50 distinct markets within a few years, with an ambitious objective of impacting over one million children globally. This initiative aims to empower them by helping them explore their abilities and pursue their aspirations. The culmination of this global network will be the FAT World Cup, an annual event where top drivers from each location battle it out for a coveted Formula 4 race seat. Designed to engage younger audiences, this one-day competition seeks to reinvent the thrill of motor racing.

Ferdi Porsche describes the World Cup not merely as a contest, but as a significant occasion. Our aim is for children to sense the thrill and excitement similar to that of professional racers.

The FKL isn’t just a racing league; it’s more like a cultural shift within motor sports. Porsche and Smedley view the league as a means to connect with youth culture, combining racing with music, fashion, and gaming to offer a vibrant, contemporary experience. As Porsche put it, “The FAT Karting League is stirring up an old-fashioned industry. It’s about making motor sports enjoyable, reachable, and inspiring for the future generation.

To clarify, both Porsche and Smedley emphasized that the introduction of FKL is not just a pastime for them, but instead a “mission-oriented initiative” dedicated to making motorsport more accessible and cultivating a diverse pool of racing talent at every level. Here’s a sneak peek at one of these aspiring racers pursuing their dreams in the video below.
