As a seasoned veteran of Final Fantasy 14, I can confidently say that the art of tanking is not for the faint-hearted. With years of experience under my belt, I’ve learned to appreciate the intricate dance between protection and provocation that tanks must master.
Are you interested in taking on the role of a defensive powerhouse in Final Fantasy XIV, helping to lead and protect your fellow adventurers as a tank? If so, here are some tips for excelling in this vital position.
In simpler terms, ‘Tanxiety’ is the anxious feeling that comes from potentially ruining others’ gameplay by using poor tanking strategies in Final Fantasy XIV. However, don’t be intimidated as tanks are independent character classes to play within this game. Although it might seem challenging at first, there are methods to make the tank role more manageable in FFXIV.
#1 Always Maintain an Active Tank Stance
Mastering the Tank Stance is a fundamental part of your gameplay. At level 10, you acquire this essential skill, which may go by different names based on your character’s profession. For instance:
Gladiator/Paladin | Iron Will |
---|---|
Marauder/Warrior | Defiance |
Gunbreaker | Royal Guard |
Dark Knight | Grit |
The Tank Stance increases the rate at which you generate hostility, causing any foe you strike or are near to prioritize attacking you over your party’s healers and damage dealers. Furthermore, it aids in preserving your aggression towards bosses and regular mobs.
In a group of four adventurers in a dungeon, always activate your Tank mode right from the beginning if you’re the main tank (MT). For larger parties in Raids or Trials, keep your Tank mode engaged throughout the encounter if you’re the main tank. However, if you’re the off-tank (OT), begin the battle without activating your Tank mode. Activate it to take control of the boss or enemies only when the main tank is incapacitated.
#2 Positioning is Key
In the role of a Tank, you become the focal point. Consequently, adversaries aim their penalties and area-of-effect abilities at you. During these tense situations, the importance of your placement cannot be overstated.
As a fellow enthusiast, I always ensure that when engaging bosses or enemies, I deliberately position myself so they face me instead of my party members. In other words, their backs are turned towards our group. This strategic move ensures that any Party-Wide attacks are directed at me first, safeguarding my comrades and dealing damage to the enemy.
A helpful tip for maintaining position is to remain within the Healer’s healing zone. If you stray too far from the Healer, it could lead to your demise, causing mobs to attack other party members and potentially wiping out the entire team.
#3 Mobs are Yours to Pull
As a tank, it’s part of your role to draw the focus of the enemies towards you. By doing so, you create an opportunity for your team to swiftly eliminate those enemies.
In a dungeon, you’ll often encounter groups of around three enemies together. As you advance, engage the enemy units as you pass them, which is sometimes called a “Wall-to-Wall pull.” When you reach about ten enemies, pause, position them so their backs are facing your group, and then eliminate them systematically.
If you gather too many enemies at once, they might turn hostile towards your group, attacking them one by one. Don’t fret if you’re new to tanking with some nervousness – managing a pull of two groups will help you control the enemies effectively and prevent your healer from being overwhelmed trying to keep up with your health levels.
To ensure a successful dungeon run, it is advisable to draw out only one or two groups of enemies at a time. Additionally, monitor the healing capabilities of your healer after each group encounter.
#4 Invulnerabilities and Mitigations are Your Besties

Protections and resilience help minimize the amount of harm you receive, reducing the burden on your healer.
Skills that mitigate damage lessen the harm sustained, also postponing potential fatalities. Conversely, temporary invincibility (often abbreviated as “invulns” in gaming slang), ensures that no death occurs, regardless of having only 1 point of health remaining.
Each tank job vulnerability skill is unique. For example:
- Paladin’s Hallowed Ground nullifies all damage taken for 10 seconds.
- Warrior’s Holmgang doesn’t let your HP go beyond one for 10 seconds.
- Gunbreaker’s Superbolide drops your HP to one but negates all damages for 10 seconds.
- Dark Knight’s Living Dead allows their hits to heal them when they die. If a healer heals them back to their total HP, they don’t die.
As a seasoned gamer, I’ve found that when it comes to damage reduction abilities, all tanks share two universal mitigations: Rampant and Reprisal. The former, Rampant, is a widely recognized skill that diminishes the amount of damage I take, while concurrently boosting my Health Point restoration. In high-pressure situations where an enemy unleashes a tank-busting attack, swiftly activate your Rampant and you’ll barely feel a thing – it’s like the blow was nothing more than a harmless scratch!
When your health gauge consistently lowers, utilize these abilities to stay alive, allowing your healer to more swiftly restore your health.
Below is a table of all mitigations and invulnerability for every tank job class in FFXIV:
Tank Job | Job-Specific Mitigations | Job-Specific Invulnerabilities |
---|---|---|
Paladin | * Sheltron * Intervention * Divine Veil * Sentinel * Passage of Arms * Cover | Hallowed Ground |
Warrior | * Vengeance * Raw Intuition * Nascent Flash * Shake it Off * Equilibrium * Thrill of Battle | Holmgang |
Gunbreaker | * Nebula * Heart of Stone * Camouflage * Heart of Light * Aurora | Superbolide |
Dark Knight | * Shadow Veil * The Blackest Knight * Dark Mind * Dark Missionary * Abyssal Drain | Living Dead |
Essential guidelines for excelling as a tank in FFXIV are provided below, but remember that your personal approach and gaming history contribute significantly to mastering the role effectively in every mission within Final Fantasy 14.
