Final Fantasy Rebirth’s Sequel Has All The Attention Of Square Enix, And Not Without Good Reason

Story Highlights

  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is one of the best action-adventure RPGs in the business right now.
  • The game belongs to a three-part trilogy and is yet to be succeeded by the final iteration in the series.
  • The developer of the trilogy has said that Rebirth’s DLC is getting skipped to favor work on part 3.

Square Enix is planning the next installment in their highly successful Final Fantasy 7 remake series, which was most recently continued with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. In line with their goals, the developers aim to produce a three-part trilogy for the classic 1997 game Final Fantasy 7, and it seems that their attention is now turning towards creating the final third part of this series.

In an interview with Daily Star, Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the series, discussed the possibility of Downloadable Content (DLC) and whether the studio might explore this path. Hamaguchi mentioned that there is significant fan enthusiasm for potential DLC, but what fans crave even more than an expansion for Rebirth, is something else entirely.

It’s clear that the enthusiasm from fans for more content is apparent, with many expressing a desire for certain things. I wholeheartedly agree with their sentiment, but from my standpoint, it seems that what fans crave most isn’t necessarily Downloadable Content (DLC). Instead, they are eagerly anticipating the swift release of the third installment in the series.

According to Hamaguchi, the team is devoting their efforts towards developing the next installment of Final Fantasy 7 rather than creating Downloadable Content (DLC) for the Rebirth version.

Currently, our priority is to devote all available resources towards releasing the third game as soon as possible. Consequently, we’ve chosen not to work on extra episodes for DLC at this time. Our focus is primarily on this task.

Remaking The Original Final Fantasy 7 Has Taken Three Games

It’s highly likely that this announcement brings fantastic news for enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the next installment of Final Fantasy 7. Notably, the initial release from the late ’90s was distributed across 3 CDs on the PlayStation, offering an extensive narrative.

Approximately 80% of the entire game is found in the first disc, and since both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have covered this part of the gaming experience, it’s expected that the third Final Fantasy 7 title will focus on the remaining two discs. These remaining sections don’t seem overly long based on my memory.

On February 29, 2024, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was launched, available exclusively on PlayStation 5. It turned out to be the second most popular game downloaded that month on this platform.
