Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster Continues Worrying Trend of Cutting PSP Exclusive Content

At first, many enthusiasts showed great enthusiasm when Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles was initially unveiled during Sony’s State of Play. It had been quite some time since Square Enix had released a genuine FF Tactics game, making a remaster of the original highly desirable among fans. Initially, it was believed that this remake would incorporate content from War of the Lions on PSP, but unfortunately, that is not the reality.

Although it features fresh voiceovers and retains the stunning cutscenes from the PSP version, it appears that this Final Fantasy Tactics remaster does not include the additional content found in War of the Lions. Unfortunately, this is a trend that’s becoming more common with recent remasters and remakes.

The interview from Square Enix has made it clear that the upcoming release of The Ivalice Chronicles won’t include the additional content from the PSP version, which had previously elevated this port. Consequently, the Dark Knight and Onion Knight classes will not be playable in the remaster. Moreover, Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 is the sole unique guest character; characters like Luso from Final Fantasy Tactics A2 and Balthier from Final Fantasy 12 are no longer included.

Kazutoyo Maehiro, head of the Final Fantasy Tactics Remake, tried to justify their choice in this matter. Maehiro argues that the PlayStation 1 original offers a complete gaming experience, making additional content from the PSP version unnecessary. Although the initial game stands strong on its own merits, including the PSP port’s cinematic scenes in the remaster suggests that they could have preserved that extra material.

Sadly, this isn’t the only remaster that has cut content from a better release.

Many players are still upset with Atlus for not offering the female protagonist as an option in Persona 3 Reload. Although additional FES content was eventually released as DLC, the omission of the female character from Persona 3 Portable continues to be a point of contention among many gamers. Some players have resorted to modifying the PC version of the game to include this character, but it would have been more satisfying if Atlus had made this change officially.

Regarding Square Enix, it’s worth noting that the upcoming remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics isn’t their first attempt at a re-release. Some fans might recall the rocky launches of modern ports for games like Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, which initially presented issues such as peculiar visuals and poor frame rates respectively. Similarly, Tactics Ogre: Reborn had its share of problems, including the removal of certain battle options and the addition of random battle cards that introduced unpredictable battle effects.

At minimum, supporters can find comfort knowing that War of the Lions is playable on smartphones. Essentially, this mobile version encompasses the entire PSP game, allowing enthusiasts to access additional content if desired. However, we can’t help but hope for a more convenient console release of this port.

The game “Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles” is likely to be enjoyable at its launch, yet it might have been even more exceptional. It’s possible that the current lack of popularity in the “Final Fantasy” series may stem from something.
