In an unexpected twist, there are whispers that Quentin Tarantino is planning a follow-up to his 2019 movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. This potential project is said to be under development, but the details are yet to be officially confirmed.
Tarantino has expressed his intention to retire after directing ten films, leading to much conjecture about what his tenth and final film might be. One such project, nicknamed “The Movie Critic”, had been a subject of speculation due to reports about Tarantino’s ambitious script. However, it was later revealed that he would start the project anew, with the reasons behind this decision remaining unclear…until now.
According to The Playlist, a new report suggests that Quentin Tarantino’s initially planned final film was a spiritual successor to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” set in 1970s Los Angeles and featuring Brad Pitt’s stuntman character Cliff Booth. However, as the script developed, Pitt sought to hand the project over to another director – none other than David Fincher, one of Pitt’s frequent collaborators. With a first-look deal with Netflix, this upcoming film is expected to stream on their platform.
Quentin Tarantino has penned scripts for other directors in the past. For instance, Tony Scott directed the 1993 film “True Romance.” Since then, no movie script by Tarantino has been directed by someone else until Robert Rodriguez’s 1996 film “From Dusk Till Dawn,” where both films also starred and were closely associated with Tarantino. This close bond with Rodriguez facilitated their collaboration. Therefore, the news about Fincher directing a Tarantino script comes as quite a surprise.
David Fincher’s ‘Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood’ Sequel Is an Exciting Surprise
The announcement about Fincher and Pitt’s latest joint project also includes the information that any other Netflix productions Fincher was preparing are being temporarily halted so they can focus on this as-yet unnamed film. It’s not surprising that a quasi-sequel to a Tarantino movie, directed by David Fincher, would take priority over all other projects Fincher had planned, given the rare opportunity to direct a script penned by an esteemed director who is known for guarding his stories closely is too good to pass up.
It seems that Netflix acquired the rights for the 2019 film due to a deal Tarantino made with Sony regarding his ownership share in the movie. Additionally, there’s speculation about Leonardo DiCaprio potentially reprising his role as Rick Dalton, but it’s unclear if he has a part in the script at this time.
As a cinephile myself, I must say that the ongoing collaboration between these two legendary directors is nothing short of thrilling and utterly unforeseen. If this project sees the light of day, it could potentially function as an intriguing prelude to Quentin Tarantino’s next masterpiece. It’s hard to think of any director more fitting to follow up the brilliant “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” than David Fincher – a filmmaker renowned for his unwavering commitment to the art and his precise, detailed approach to cinematic storytelling.
