Find & beat 'The Hateful' in God of War Ragnarok with these tips

As a seasoned God of War fan, I must say that the mini-boss encounter with The Hateful has been one of the most exhilarating and challenging experiences in my gaming journey thus far. From Svartelfheim to Vanaheim, tracking down this vengeful Draugr spirit has proven to be an engaging side story woven seamlessly into the main narrative.

In God of War Ragnarok, you’ll frequently come across a recurring mini-boss known as “The Betrayed Empress’s Avenger,” or simply “The Hateful.” This character is a significant part of the game’s engaging side stories. The Hateful is actually a Draugr, a vengeful spirit once an empress who was betrayed. Here’s what you need to know to overcome this formidable foe.

Finding the ‘The Hateful’

Your first possible and most likely encounter with The Hateful is in Svartelfheim, at the Watchtower near the mining rigs.

  • On the same island as the central mining rig, go west and climb up to the tower. Go up the stairs to find a Draugr Hole, and fight The Hateful
  • Once the Draugr are defeated, you will find some useful resources, including a Chaos Flame at the Draugr Hole

This initiates the “Born From Fire Favor,” a mission requiring you to eliminate five additional Draugr Holes across various realms. In each location, you will encounter “The Hateful” once more, forcing another battle against her. The next Draugr Hole can be found in Applecore, which is the mine in Svartelfheim where Kratos and Atreus hunt for Tyr.

During your mining expedition, you’ll come across the Draugr Hole hidden behind one of the doors you need to open. It’s quite conspicuous, so you shouldn’t have much trouble locating it. Keep in mind that the Draugr Holes can be tackled in any sequence; this is simply the order we encountered them.

  • In Alfheim, go to the western corner of the Barrens region. Climb up the rocky outcrop and you will find the Draugr Hole there
  • Then in Midgard, go northeast from Tyr’s Temple, there is a relatively narrow path in that direction, climb up a ledge on the left a short way down that path to find the next location

As a fan, I’d put it this way: “The last two are hidden in Vanaheim, and here’s your path to them. First up, I need you to grab the legendary Draupnir spear. With that in hand, venture to the forgotten Village. Once there, use the spear to reveal the cave entrance southwest of the village. Inside this cavern lies the next Draugr’s lair.”

To wrap things up, you’ll have to accomplish the task “Scent of Survival” at The Crater first, so the water in that region gets rejuvenated. Once you’ve done that, head to the dock located in The Plains, which is southeast of The Crater. Climb the stairs from the dock, and you’ll find yourself directly at the last Draugr Hole. Overcome The Hateful one more time to finish the task.

How to beat The Hateful

The Hateful is a formidable Undead, similar to a zombie. She is not only swift and nimble but also capable of inflicting significant damage with her attacks. What sets her apart is that she rarely fights alone, instead summoning other Undead to increase the difficulty level. Additionally, you’ll often encounter her in diverse locations. The secret to defeating her lies in effectively managing the battle situation.

In summary, charging headfirst into battle at the Watchtower could lead to your demise. Given its compact size, you might find yourself swiftly overpowered by the trio approaching – one of whom is a powerful Draugr boss.

Instead, consider maintaining a safe space and managing the encounter. Use the stairs leading down to the lower level to create some distance, making it more likely for your enemies to approach you. And remember, prioritize eliminating the additional Draugr, as they can divert your attention, allowing The Hateful to take advantage of the situation.

After vanquishing the additional Draugr, you’ll find it easier to concentrate on The Hateful. Most of her attacks consist of ordinary, standard sword strikes, which can be easily blocked or parried due to their predictable nature. In fact, once you’ve taken care of the other Draugr, it becomes quite straightforward to step back, observe her moves, and successfully parry them.

1. Unblockable attacks from her, such as fireballs, are best dodged rather than parried. If they connect with you, they can ignite you, gradually depleting a large portion of your health. To avoid this, it’s crucial to evade her fiery attacks at all costs, especially the ones that cannot be blocked. She also has the ability to slam her axe into the ground, creating a line of fire.

In essence, maintain a safe distance, remove any ads that might disrupt the game, avoid her unavoidable attacks and fireballs, counter her regular strikes with parries, and strike back when she’s stunned. Gradually chip away at her strength, and you should find it relatively straightforward to conquer The Hateful.
