In the original version, The Golden Bachelor doesn’t believe there should be any upper age limits for the group of women featured on his show.
In a recent podcast interview, at the age of 66, Owens openly disclosed that during casting, producers inquired about his personal preferences. He straightforwardly replied, “I simply said ’45 to 60′.” He also recounted another instance where he candidly told the producers, “If they’re 60 or older, I’m rejecting them.” He clarified, “This isn’t The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor.”
In a podcast interview, Owens, who is 66 years old, spoke about his casting experiences. He shared that the producers asked him about his preferences. Responding honestly, he said, “I told them I prefer contestants aged between 45 and 60.” He also recounted an instance where he stated, “If the contestants are over 60, I won’t consider them.” He made it clear that this wasn’t a show for the elderly, but rather The Golden Bachelor.)
As a devoted fan, I was taken aback when I heard Owens’ assertions. Frankly speaking, hearing about an age restriction wouldn’t make me happy if it applied to the original star of the Golden Bachelor, Gerry Turner. He shared this sentiment with Fox News, expressing that it would be unfortunate in such a scenario.
He expressed his belief that there might be a shift in his perspective, “He’s likely to reconsider this,” he said. “I believe he will appreciate the elegance and allure of women in their sixties, as well as the self-assuredness they possess, and I’m sure it will lead to a change in his viewpoint.
During his stint on the Bachelor franchise, Turner’s dating circle comprised between 60 and 75 women. He expressed gratitude towards every individual in his season, referring to them as “a gift.
Turner stated that each individual contributed distinct traits to the performance, making those qualities tangible. He emphasized that the age should be disregarded and focus should be placed on the person instead.
After the debut of the initial “Golden Bachelor” season, ABC extended the series by selecting Joan Vassos as its first “Golden Bachelorette.” Now, with Owens being chosen as the second figurehead for the new “Golden” franchise, singles who had previously appeared on both shows were given the opportunity to participate in “Bachelor in Paradise” for the very first time this year.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the newly appointed showrunner/executive producer of the Bachelor and BIP, Scott Teti, shared that there were extensive talks between him and the network regarding their choice to relocate the Goldens to Costa Rica in search of romance.
Teti remarked, ‘It’s certainly unique – it’s bold, it’s a grand concept.’ A great deal of consideration went into the execution and integration of this idea within the show. I believe the outcome was quite impressive as it brings together two different generations, each with their own perspectives.
