In his illustrious career, Alexander Skarsgård has taken on a variety of roles. He’s been a vampire in ‘True Blood’, a Viking in ‘The Northman’, a Swedish CEO in ‘Succession’, and Randall Flagg in Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’. Now, he’s stepping into a new role as a security robot for the upcoming sci-fi series ‘Murderbot’ on Apple TV+. We’re excited to share some exclusive sneak peeks of Skarsgård in his latest small-screen appearance.
The images you see are provided by Apple and offer a glimpse into what Skarsgård’s character might look like in the upcoming series. Inspired by Martha Wells’ bestselling books, Murderbot revolves around a self-aware security robot that finds itself fascinated by human emotions despite its initial repulsion towards them. Portrayed by Skarsgård, Murderbot is compelled to conceal its autonomy and finish a dangerous mission, all while longing for solitude to enjoy futuristic soap operas and ponder its role in the cosmos. The images show Skarsgård in his uniform, with one showing him wearing his helmet and another displaying his short haircut and neutral expression without it.
Alongside Skarsgård, the cast of Murderbot includes Noma Dumezweni (known for Presumed Innocent), David Dastmalchian (Oppenheimer), Sabrina Wu (Joy Ride), Akshay Khanna (Critical Incident), Tattiawna Jones (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Tamara Podemski (Outer Range). The series was developed by Chris Weitz (Afraid) and his brother Paul Weitz (Little Fockers) under their Depth of Field production company, and it was produced for Apple TV+ by Paramount Television Studios. If it becomes popular, there’s a chance for a long-lasting run as there are seven books in Martha Wells’ The Murderbot Diaries series to draw from.
Alexander Skarsgård is Perfect for ‘Murderbot’
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel that Murderbot, with its blend of science fiction, humor, and suspense, seems tailor-made for the exceptional talents of Alexander Skarsgård. His unique gift for adaptability has captivated us fans not just because of his striking good looks, but also due to his uncanny ability to seamlessly transition between genres, much like a chameleon.
Skarsgård is one of those rare gems in the entertainment industry who can deliver powerful drama when necessary, yet isn’t afraid to showcase his comedic flair. The humor he brings to his roles often leaves us in stitches, and who could ever forget the memorable plot twist in True Blood Season 4, where Eric Northman lost his memory? In that instance, Skarsgård demonstrated his versatility by expertly playing against type, offering a performance that was as surprising as it was captivating.
After displaying his versatility in the steamy film titled “Pillion,” he will reappear alongside Harry Melling, famously known for his role as Dudley Dursley in the “Harry Potter” series. This quirky, explicit love story sees Skarsgård play Ray, the charismatic head of a motorcycle gang who recruits the timid Colin (Melling) to be his new subordinate. The film is currently under post-production, and a release date has yet to be announced.
Before we reach that point, you can catch Alexander Skarsgård’s debut in “Murderbot,” a ten-episode sci-fi series set to premiere worldwide on Apple TV+. The first two episodes will drop on Friday, May 16, with subsequent episodes released weekly until July 11. For an even more intense performance from Skarsgård, don’t forget to watch the 2023 movie “Infinity Pool,” directed by Brandon Cronenberg, a chilling horror film that stands out as one of the most visceral in recent memory. This film can be streamed on Hulu.
