The initial footage of was unveiled at CinemaCon, however, many are yet to catch their first official glance at the updated big-screen version of He-Man. In the interim, fresh set photos have provided a tantalizing sneak peek at one of the franchise’s signature locations: Castle Grayskull.
Although you’ll have to exercise your creative faculties somewhat, recently leaked set photos from the movie seem to unveil what looks like the iconic jaw-bridge of the powerful fortress. Notably, this structure has not been given its deserved screen time in a live-action film. Despite the fact that it seems that extensive CGI will be employed for the development of Eternia in Masters of the Universe, dedicated fans can pick out a few hints from the distant shots.
In addition to Prince Adam, portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine, apparently getting captured by Skeletor’s minions (played by Jared Leto), the scene also showcases a glimpse of Skeleton’s Havoc Staff, an actor donning a prop that will likely be swapped for a substantial CGI character later on. Furthermore, there are several costumed characters present in the scene, which might undergo some enhancements courtesy of special effects magic as well. Take a look at the images below to get a better idea.
‘Masters of the Universe’ Will Include Practical Effects
In this image, the circular green screen setup may lead one to assume that the upcoming ‘Masters of the Universe’ film might heavily rely on Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) instead of the Power of Grayskull for its special effects. However, recent CinemaCon footage suggests that the movie will indeed make use of practical effects extensively. The footage description indicates:
In this BTS footage, there’s a glimpse of He-Man’s sword as the director reminisces about his childhood toys. You can hear “By the power of Grayskull!” echoing in the background. The scene is filled with real-life effects (combined with VFX), authentic costumes similar to the cartoon, and massive physical sets. As the video concludes, you can see He-Man’s hair rustling in the wind.
The film adaptation of “Masters of the Universe” has had a challenging path to production, spending an extended period in development limbo that made it appear as if it would never see the light of day on screen. After being handed from one streaming platform to another, and with multiple directors and actors attached to the project, the first live-action He-Man film since 1987’s movie featuring Dolph Lundgren is now in production thanks to Amazon MGM Studios. The cast for this upcoming production is quite impressive, boasting Galitzine as Prince Adam (He-Man), Camila Mendes as Teela, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man, James Purefoy as King Randor, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena Glenn, and MCU star Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms. According to a recent rumor, it’s said that even Dolph Lundgren may make a cameo in the film.
Given the strong indications that the film appears to closely emulate the 1980s cartoon series in terms of aesthetics, it’s quite likely that Masters of the Universe will delight fans from the 80s who stubbornly cling to their youthful spirit.
