‘First Purge’ Filmmaker Gerard McMurray to Direct ‘Goons’ for Confluential Films’ New Horror Label

As a passionate horror enthusiast with a soft spot for films that delve deep into societal issues, I am absolutely thrilled about Gerard McMurray‘s latest project, “Goons.” Having directed “The First Purge,” McMurray has already proven his knack for creating gripping narratives set against the backdrop of tense American socio-political landscapes.

As a gamer, I’m pumped up about the news that the director of “The First Purge,” Gerard McMurray, is jetting off to Louisiana for “Goons.” This chilling new horror feature is set in the spine-tingling landscape of Louisiana’s cane fields and plantations. Can’t wait to see what terrors lie hidden among those haunting vistas!

In the ongoing production of “Goon,” taking place in New Orleans and its surrounding regions, Michael Rainey Jr., known for his role in “Power,” and Chloe Bailey, from “The Exorcism,” are set to take on leading roles.

Tommy Oliver, through his production house Confluential Films, is set to create projects under its new label New Fear Unlocked Productions. This new genre division is focused on producing daring and refined horror movies that are culturally relevant and will be helmed by creators of diverse ethnic backgrounds.

McMurray co-wrote the script with Hodge K. Johnson.

“Oliver, who’s backing the project financially, expressed his eagerness for people to witness what Gerard and he have been developing with our exceptional team. He’s equally thrilled to launch New Fear Unlocked with this movie directed by such a skillful filmmaker.”

McMurray expressed his immense enthusiasm: “I can’t wait to direct a horror movie! The film, titled Goons, is a heartfelt tribute to my hometown, New Orleans, and holds a deeply personal significance for me. Working on this project alongside Confluential/New Fear Unlocked underscores the strength of Black storytellers who work together.”

Confluential is recognized for ventures like the Sundance Grand Jury award-winning production “Going To Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project” and the feature film “Fancy Dance” with Lily Gladstone. Their recent move into a horror-centric label coincides with a thriving period for horror, one of the few genres that has remained robust at the box office. This surge in popularity has led studios across Hollywood to strengthen their presence in this genre.

As a gamer, I’m represented by WME, Artists First, and Gang Tyre. Some others might be with Independent Artist Group, Higher Level Talents, Untitled Entertainment, and Yorn Levine. Bailey is represented by CAA, just like Oliver and Confluential who are also represented by The BALA Firm.
