As a devoted fan of FBI, I must say that Episode 4 of Season 7, “Doubted,” was a gripping installment that left me captivated. However, it wasn’t just the intricate case that Sydney Ortiz brought to the team or the introduction of Lisette Olivera as a new series regular that caught my attention. Instead, it was the subtle yet poignant moments from Maggie that truly resonated with me.
Spoilers are ahead for Episode 4 of FBI Season 7, called “Doubted.”
In the episode “Doubted,” CBS’ FBI team found themselves tangled in a complex case of sexual assault, which grew increasingly convoluted as they dug deeper, thanks to BAU Profiler Sydney Ortiz raising the issue within the team. Recently, Lisette Olivera, who played a significant role in National Treasure: Edge of History, was slated to become a series regular on this hit show; however, it seems that Syd’s tenure will be brief. In this particular episode, scheduled for fall 2024 TV lineup, I found myself noticing subtle moments from Maggie that added up to a poignant revelation. These instances also echoed the insights Missy Peregym, our leading lady, shared with TopMob earlier this year about Maggie’s interpersonal connections.
What “Doubted” Revealed About Maggie’s Personal Life
In the latest episode on November 12, the primary focus was undeniably on Syd, as expected since she was joining the team permanently. As a dedicated fan eager to delve deeper into Maggie’s life and background, I paid close attention when the agent brought up Syd’s sister, Erin. During their conversation about an assault on her own sister, Maggie discussed her actions with Syd.
Regardless of the circumstances, I couldn’t stand idly by in your situation either. If anyone threatened my sister, I’d feel compelled to track that person down as well.
Ever since Season 5 when Maggie took a tough stance on Erin, she hasn’t been seen on FBI. Each time they cross paths on screen, their relationship has been fraught, to say the least. Now, I can’t deny that Erin’s past with drugs doesn’t make Maggie look great in these encounters, but it’s those very scenes that showcase Missy Peregrym at her best, delivering some truly captivating performances. Later on, during our chat with Syd, Maggie mentioned…
Yeah, I have a hard time believing my sister too… She has her demons.
From the way Maggie spoke about Erin’s problems, I got the feeling that maybe the sisters hadn’t improved their relationship beyond what we saw in Season 5. However, it seems that her reference to “demons” might have been more a reminder of their past hardships, as she made this comment to OA while they were celebrating solving the case at the end of the episode.
I called to check in. Ella’s doing great. I mean, it helps that she loves Erin.
To put it simply, if not for my fondness of the FBI delving into Maggie’s family background, I might have overlooked the agent seemingly referring to her sister when she mentioned “Erin.” It’s hard to imagine any other Erin being mentioned in the same episode where references to Maggie’s sister were made. The context of the episode “Doubted” suggests this strongly.
It seemed clear to me that the swift choice was indicative of not just Maggie and her sister making up, but their relationship being strong enough for Maggie to entrust Erin with Ella. Moreover, it hinted at them having spent a considerable amount of time together that Ella developed affection for Erin. To put it simply, it brought to mind a chat I once had with Missy Peregrym regarding Maggie, Ella, and Erin during Season 6.
What Missy Peregrym Shared About Maggie And Erin
In March, I had a chat with Missy Peregrym following the extensive development of Maggie’s character where she took on the role of Ella’s mom. During our conversation, she shared her views on how Maggie’s efforts to aid Ella amidst tragedy while maintaining her work commitment didn’t seem plausible in Season 6. I also wanted to know her perspective on whether her intricate relationship with Erin had equipped her for managing a grieving Ella, and Peregrym replied:
As Maggie, I struggle with maintaining a healthy relationship with my sister because our bond isn’t strong and I don’t know how to improve it. I lack the skills to create distance when needed, which makes me fear that our relationship might remain unhealthy. The thought of not confiding in her or having that support system is distressing to me. Another aspect we could delve into is the complexities of mending our relationship. How can we reconcile and bring our family back together?
Although the FBI didn’t confirm that the “Erin” mentioned by Maggie at the end of “Doubted” was indeed her sister, it seems to me that the character played by Missy Peregrym may have delved into and addressed some of those intricacies. Granted, the actress might have wished to do so in a future episode, but it’s a heartwarming concept that Maggie now has her sister as a support system, expanding her family beyond just Ella. Peregrym further expressed:
She is my actual family, and then I have this responsibility to take care of this child and be her family and create a new thing. You would probably feel ill-equipped or questioning yourself because if you can’t even do that with your sister, you feel this pressure of how can I lead a child and take care of a child and know that I have what it takes to really show up? But again, I love the gray area. I love sitting in the complicated dynamics of people. They could take this really anywhere they wanted to. I just have to wait and see.
If the appearance of Erin in the last Season 7 episode indeed signals a reconciliation between the sisters, it means we won’t have to wait long, as Peregrym expressed her thoughts less than eight months ago when “Doubted” was released. Intriguingly, this has me considering rewatching the earlier episodes featuring Maggie and Erin, which is convenient with a Paramount+ subscription. For future updates, don’t forget to tune in on November 19 for the upcoming episode.
