As a devoted fan, I’m deeply saddened to share the news that our beloved chef Anne Burrell, known for her vibrant presence on Food Network, has tragically passed away due to suicide, as confirmed by the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner. At just 55 years old, this loss leaves a profound impact. Reports suggest that she had ingested multiple substances. This news is heartbreaking and our thoughts are with Anne’s family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.
Following the completion of the inquiry, it was determined by the medical examiner that the deceased’s death was a result of “a sudden overdose caused by the collective impact of diphenhydramine, alcohol, cetirizine, and amphetamines.”
The autopsy report said the person died because they took too much of diphenhydramine (allergy medicine), alcohol, cetirizine (another allergy medicine), and amphetamines (stimulant drugs) together.
The passing of Anne Burrell at her Brooklyn residence, where she was found unconscious, was initially shared by her family on June 17. In a statement released then, they expressed: “Anne was cherished as a spouse, sibling, daughter, stepmother, and friend – her smile brightened every space she stepped into. Anne’s positivity shone far beyond those close to her, affecting countless individuals worldwide. Although she is no longer physically present, the warmth of her heart, the vigor of her spirit, and the depth of her love remain everlasting.
Apart from her husband Stuart Claxton, who works in advertising for Univision and married her in October 2021 (Rachael Ray served as a bridesmaid), she was also survived by her three children: Isabella, Amelia, and Nicolas; her stepson Javier; her mother Marlene; and her siblings Jane and Ben.
For twenty-seven seasons, Burrell co-hosted the television series “Worst Cooks in America,” which first aired on the Food Network in 2010, with Beau MacMillan by her side.
Burrell made guest appearances on the Food Network in shows such as Chopped, Celebrity Food Fight, Cutthroat Kitchen, Cooks vs. Cons, Food Network Star, The Kitchen, Beat Bobby Flay, Wildcard Kitchen, and House of Knives, where she showcased her culinary skills by competing against others.
A representative from Food Network honored Burrell upon hearing of her passing five weeks ago by saying, “Anne was an extraordinary individual with exceptional culinary skills. She taught, competed, and consistently emphasized the significance of food in her life, as well as the happiness that a scrumptious meal can evoke.
