Forget Soccer! After Watching Team USA Women's Rugby Players Celebrate Their Historic Olympics Win, I Need A Rugby Version Of Ted Lasso

As a seasoned gamer and sports enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, I must admit that the real-life drama unfolding at the 2024 Olympics in Paris has been nothing short of exhilarating. However, it’s not just the traditional powerhouses like gymnastics or swimming that have stolen my heart this time around; it’s the underdog sport of rugby sevens that has left me absolutely smitten!

At the 2024 Olympics in Paris, gymnastics and swimming were crowd favorites as usual, with Team USA’s pommel horse sensation stealing the spotlight. However, a remarkable group of American women made history on the rugby field that left me yearning for a show like “Ted Lasso” centered around them rather than more football/soccer. I also found myself wishing I knew more about rugby. Kudos to the U.S. women’s rugby sevens team, as their medal marked a first in American history for this event!

How Team USA’s Women’s Rugby Team Made History

1. In the end, the female rugby sevens squad clinched the bronze medal thanks to their triumph, and while a bronze isn’t any less significant for the U.S., it would have been just as historic if they had won silver or gold. The final moments of the match were thrilling, with the score standing at 12-6 in favor of Australia. In an unexpected turn of events, Alex Sedrick made a daring breakaway and raced down the field to score, tying the game. To add to the excitement, she followed up her touchdown with a game-winning conversion kick, securing a 14-12 victory for Team USA.

As someone who has always been a casual sports fan, I must admit that I often find myself drawn into the thrill of the Olympics, even when it comes to sports I don’t know much about. The morning before the decisive bronze medal match, I woke up with little understanding of what was at stake, but the allure of the games compelled me to dive in and learn as I went along. It seems that I am not alone in this experience; the excitement is palpable on social media platforms like Twitter, where people from all walks of life share their enthusiasm for the unexpected sports they’ve become invested in. The Olympics have a unique ability to bring people together and create shared moments of passion and curiosity, even among those who might otherwise remain on the sidelines.

  • @beckywtheokhair: “Never have I ever felt more patriotic than watching the US women’s rugby 7s team win their first Olympic medal in HISTORY”
  • @MMMMBandit: “I dont know nothin about no Rugby but THIS was the most electric thing ive in the Olympics thus far[.] Shout out to the Women’s US Rugby team on winning their first metal in walk off fashion”
  • @OnHerTurf: “TEAM USA WOMEN’S RUGBY SEVENS MEDALS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN TEAM HISTORY!”
  • @yscrugby: “The moment USA Rugby women won the Bronze Medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics! This will be remembered as one of the greatest comebacks in sports history.”
  • @zachparker_sff: “Women’s rugby would take off in America with some initial funding behind it. I’m loving watching this. Could be the best investment in women’s sports. Feeds on our football addiction while being different enough to be something new. Someone take a chance!”

Regardless of whether you were a seasoned rugby enthusiast, a novice, or simply a spectator eagerly awaiting the return of your favorite TV schedule following the Olympics, the thunderous cheers from the crowd made it clear that something remarkable was unfolding as soon as one of the U.S. women managed to grab the ball and dash forward! In case you didn’t catch it or wish to revisit the event multiple times, here is a link below:

The ending was certainly epic, but I wouldn’t say that rugby is similar enough to soccer that just seeing the sport would make me think of Ted Lasso. If anything, to me as somebody without much of any background on rugby, the sport seems much more similar to American football. Here’s why I did in fact start thinking about one of the best Apple TV+ TV shows and why I want to see a version of it with women’s rugby.

Why A Rugby TV Show Could Be Great

It’s clear that if the series Ted Lasso demonstrated anything, it’s that American viewers are open to watching a program centered around a sport not typically popular in the U.S. I must confess, even after watching the show, I still don’t understand the rules of offside in football/soccer, but boy, was it an emotional journey filled with both triumph and loss. Whenever they cheered, I couldn’t help but cheer along with them.

In the same manner, I shared their excitement when Alex Sedrick made her remarkable final run and then scored the conversion. Without being an expert on the rules, it was clear to me that what I was witnessing was extraordinary. It would have been delightful to see an underrepresented sport like this one featured in a show akin to Ted Lasso.

In simpler terms, the ending of Ted Lasso didn’t seem to be setting up a spinoff focusing on A.F.C. Richmond women’s team specifically. However, a show centered around female athletes in an intense sport sounds intriguing! And why not include some famous guests like Flavor Flav and Jason Kelce for added fun?

If you find those choices peculiar, there’s an explanation behind them! In a lively video on X, Flavor Flav expressed his appreciation for rugby, cheering for the ladies to secure the bronze medal. Remarkably, Jason Kelce was spotted playing catch with a rugby ball while socializing with the team.

Hey there, if Travis Kelce can venture into acting during his active NFL career, why not consider Jason Kelce taking up acting after retiring from football? Honestly, I’d be thrilled to witness a TV show akin to “Ted Lasso,” focusing on the journey of a women’s rugby team. It wouldn’t simply be “Ted Lasso 2.0” with the same sport; rather, it would offer a unique perspective and enough time has passed since I watched the series that I’m eager for another heartfelt sports-themed TV show. In fact, I’d be willing to familiarize myself with the intricacies of rugby – excluding the concept of offsides, as I’ve learned my lesson about committing to understanding that!

In a straightforward manner, if you’re keen on watching the entire women’s rugby sevens encounter between Team USA and Australia live, consider getting a Peacock Premium subscription as it will stream this significant game. On the other hand, for those who enjoy “Ted Lasso,” all three seasons are accessible with a subscription to Apple TV+.
