The video game developer Julian LeFay, who played a significant role in Bethesda’s early days and the creation of iconic Elder Scrolls RPGs like Arena and Daggerfall, has sadly passed away. This news was shared by OnceLost Games, the studio he helped establish in 2019, following a prolonged struggle with cancer.
Last week, LeFay resigned from his position as technical director at OnceLost, where he collaborated on The Wayward Realms, an RPG inspired by Daggerfall, alongside Ted Peterson, a former colleague from Bethesda. It was disclosed that this decision came because of the worsening state of LeFay’s cancer, and the team at OnceLost stated that his doctors had informed them “his time among us is becoming scarce.
Expressing LeFay’s passing in simpler terms, the studio team stated that he was more than just a coworker; he was a visionary who significantly molded the gaming industry into its current form. They highly commended his relentless dedication to exploring and expanding the limits of what Role-Playing Games (RPGs) could accomplish.
During his valiant fight against cancer, Julian never lost his fervor for The Wayward Realms. Remarkably, he persisted in expressing his vision to our team, guiding our developers, and making certain that every facet of the game embodied his dedication to crafting something exceptionally remarkable – even amidst his health challenges. His fortitude, resilience, and undying focus serve as an inspiration to us all.

In 1987, LeFay began working at Bethesda as a programmer, and his contributions significantly impacted numerous role-playing games, particularly those in the Elder Scrolls series. He served as the lead programmer on Arena and Battlespire, project leader for the groundbreaking Daggerfall in 1996, and was credited for The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and Morrowind. As per Peterson’s account, LeFay’s name is believed to have been the inspiration for Tamriel’s deity of wisdom and logic, Julianos.
LeFay also served as director and chief programmer on Bethesda’s The Terminator and follow-up The Terminator 2029 back in those early days. He largely disappeared from the spotlight after leaving Bethesda, working on various projects including some with Sega, before being dragged back in via an , which snowballed into LeFay and Peterson deciding to team back up on an RPG that’d be a worthy successor to the likes of Daggerfall.
2019 marked the establishment of OnceLost with the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for The Wayward Realms. As they announced LeFay’s departure from the project, Peterson and the studio team expressed their intention to continue developing their RPG in line with LeFay’s original vision for it.
I’d like to express my gratitude to LeFay for his significant input to our shared platform, and I hope the best for those who are now moving forward without him.
