Day by day, it’s another nudge of remembrance about the piece we relinquished when Square Enix opted to transfer its ownership rights to Embracer. This lingering sorrow is especially palpable among fans, particularly those who are anxiously anticipating the next installment in Adam Jensen’s story following the suspenseful finale of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
The players found themselves puzzled about the continuity of the storyline in the series, particularly curious to understand how Adam Jensen’s tale might explain the transition from the year 2029 to the year 2050, which is when the original Deus Ex is set.
Back when Deus Ex: Mankind Divided dropped, it certainly stirred up a storm of discussion due to its heavy-hitting political undertones and apparent missing content. As a dedicated gamer, I was one of many who were left scratching their heads upon discovering the game’s abrupt ending, leaving numerous plotlines hanging in the balance. This unexpected move left long-time fans like myself dumbfounded, yearning to uncover where the Illuminati saga would lead us next.
As per ex-Deus Ex writer Mark Cecere, who is renowned for his work on Mankind Divided and Human Revolution, the future of the series remains unclear. During a conversation on the From Script to Life podcast, Cecere pondered over how drastically the storyline changed during development, leaving even him unsure about where it might have headed next.
The authors found it difficult to keep up with the Illuminati in the narrative they were writing because Adam Jensen could never match their power, causing them to ponder how best to conclude the plot, as the Illuminati remained a dominant force even two decades after Jensen’s story.
Cecere pointed out, “We actually had a name from the Illuminati that we could eliminate. This is the individual that Jensen likely would have investigated or taken action against.
One key insight from the podcast seemed to be Cecere’s idea about how the sequel might have linked the storyline of Mankind Divided with that of the original Deus Ex.
In a possible sequel, it was proposed that Adam Jensen’s actions might lead to the emergence of Bob Page as the main adversary, a role familiar to players of the initial game. This plot point could significantly impact the storyline and would have fitted well with Jensen’s tragic character development.
Even Elias Toufexis, the voice actor for Adam Jensen, appears to be excited about the prospect of a third installment in the series. He regrets that he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to delve deeper into the character if such a game were made.
It’s quite disheartening to think that what was once a reality might just be wishful thinking now. Since Square Enix decided to transfer the Deus Ex ownership to Embracer Group, the series seems to have been put on an extended break for an undetermined period.
