As a cinephile with decades of film-watching under my belt, it’s always intriguing to witness the highs and lows of Hollywood. The opening weekend of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis left me scratching my head, much like one might do when attempting to decipher ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. With a budget of $120 million USD, a star-studded cast, and a visionary director at the helm, I had expected nothing short of cinematic grandeur. Alas, the film managed a paltry $4 million USD at the box office, placing it behind an Indian Telugu-language action flick – talk about an unexpected twist!
In a modest start, Francis Ford Coppola’s movie “Megalopolis” earned just $4 million at the box office, placing sixth in the rankings, outshone by the Indian Telugu-language action film “Devara: Part 1,” which took the top position.
The Adam Driver-led film was unable to meet its initial opening weekend expectations of $5 million USD to $7 million USD, and instead fell short against its $120 million USD budget as it earned from 1,854 theaters in North America. Variety points out that the film, which was financed by Coppola himself, received mixed reviews and has been plagued with poor marketing tactics and AI-generated quotes from film critics. “The movie is an ambitious, personal vision. Sometimes a film like this beats the odds and makes a lot of money,” analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research said. “This one is not working. The result is going to be a big tax write-off.”
In the sci-fi series “Megalopolis,” the story unfolds in a future version of America where Driver plays an architect tasked with rebuilding New Rome after a catastrophe. Yet, he clashes with the city’s mayor, played by Giancarlo Esposito, who orchestrates a defamation campaign against the architect.
