Frasier's Kelsey Grammer Is Reuniting With Patricia Heaton In Season 2, And He Told Us The 'Fantastic' Way It Came Together

As a long-time fan who has witnessed the comedic genius of Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton in their iconic sitcom roles, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement when I learned about their upcoming reunion for the “Frasier” revival on Paramount+. The fact that they first worked together not just once or twice, but three times before this year, adds an extra layer of charm to their partnership.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at the fact that Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton, both legends in their own right within the realm of sitcoms, have graced our screens with their extraordinary talents. Kelsey, famous for his role as Frasier Crane in Cheers and its spinoff, has left an indelible mark on television history. Similarly, Patricia’s stellar performances in Everybody Loves Raymond and The Middle have endeared her to audiences worldwide.

In a chat during the Frasier Season 2 press tour, I conversed with Kelsey Grammer, accompanied by Peri Gilpin, reprising her character Roz Doyle after her Season 1 finale appearance. Since Grammer shares a long history with Jane Leeves, I inquired about his experience working with her once more, and whether this role was tailored for her or if it went through the regular audition process. He began by explaining:

Well, it’s a funny story… I did a Gary Sinise charity event in Nashville, and as I was waiting for my plane out, I sat at this Nashville bar, and there was a gal there who reminded me of Patty. I said,’ Anybody ever tell you that you look like Patty Heaton?’ And she said, ‘Oh God, people tell me all the time.’ Her mannerisms, everything. And I suddenly thought, ‘Well, Frasier should fall in love with Patty Heaton… again.’ Because we’ve now actually been on three shows together; this one, a brief show she had on a while ago and then, of course, Back to You, which was the show we thought was going to do pretty well until the writer’s strike. So I sat in the office with the guys and I mentioned this chance meeting with this girl who just made me think, ‘Oh, what a great idea to have Patty Heaton and to bring her into Frasier’s life.’ And they said, ‘Wow!’ They called Adam, who’s our manager, we both have the same manager, and in five minutes, it was [happening]. So she’s coming! That was fantastic!

There you have it! Thanks to a chance encounter with a Patricia Heaton lookalike, Kelsey Grammer realized the actual actress would be a great choice to play a new love interest for Frasier Crane on the Paramount+ series. He successfully pitched it to showrunners Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli, and since he and Heaton share the same manager, that was more than enough to arrange for her appearing in Frasier Season 2. In case you’re unfamiliar, Grammer and Heaton first worked together on Back to You, the Fox sitcom that only aired for one season from September 2007 to May 2008, making it one of the many shows hit hard by that era’s writers strike. Then in 2020, the two reunited for an episode of Heaton’s show Carol’s Second Act, which was also cancelled after one season.

Here’s another way to put it: You recognize the old saying, “The third time is lucky!” It has been announced that Patricia Heaton will portray a bartender named Holly. According to the description, she is a down-to-earth, unpretentious woman who isn’t afraid to mock those with airs and graces, and she is extremely content with her life and where she stands. As Kelsey Grammer explained, there will be fireworks between her character and Frasier Crane. He also shared a brief anecdote about their first encounter.

Initially, we only knew they’d cross paths as bartender and customer, their connection would ignite spontaneously. It was all very authentic and effortless. She’s both amusing and charming. The first time I encountered her was 25 years ago in an elevator at the Ritz-Carlton for a promotional event, and I recall thinking, ‘She’s quite appealing. I find myself drawn to her.’ And that’s where their story begins.

Patricia Heaton is among several well-known guest stars appearing in the second season of ‘Frasier’, with others like Yvette Nicole Brown, Amy Sedaris, Rachel Bloom, Kelsey Grammer’s daughter Greer Grammer (who plays Roz’s daughter Alice), Dan Butler as Bob “Bulldog” Briscoe, Edward Hibbert as Gil Chesterton, and Harriet Sansom Harris as Bebe Glazer also joining the cast.

On Thursday, September 19, you’ll get to watch the first two episodes of Season 2 from the series “Frasier”. After that, new episodes will drop every week until all eight remaining ones are out. If you fancy watching older seasons, both “Frasier” and its precursor “Cheers” can be streamed on Paramount+.
