Frasier’s Showrunners Explains The ‘Organic Way’ They Brought Roz Back For Season 2, But I’m Especially Touched By Peri Gilpin’s Experience With Her New Co-Stars

As a gamer who grew up binge-watching classic sitcoms like Frasier and Cheers, I can say that the revival of Frasier has been a delightful trip down memory lane. The way they’ve subtly woven in familiar faces like Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin) into the narrative is a testament to the showrunners’ understanding of what makes these characters endearing.

Last year, when the first season of the Paramount+ exclusive revival of Frasier aired, only two characters from the original show made brief appearances: Bebe Neuwirth as Lilith Sternin and Peri Gilpin as Roz Doyle. In the Season 1 finale, Gilpin’s character made an appearance, and when Season 2 begins airing on the 2024 TV schedule, fans can expect to see Gilpin return as Roz in several episodes. During a chat with TopMob, the creators of Frasier shared their “natural approach” for reintroducing the character, and I was moved by Gilpin’s personal reflections on her enjoyable working relationship with her new co-stars during our interview.

Initially, during my conversation with showrunners Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli, I wanted to know if it had been part of the original plan to expand Roz’s role should Frasier be renewed for a second season. Additionally, I was curious about the creative process behind her storyline in this group of episodes. Chris shared the following insights:

Kelsey and Peri share an exceptional bond, and it was initially planned to involve her more in the show. In the first season, we indeed introduced Peri for the final episode, but we wanted to prioritize developing our own characters before her arrival. Furthermore, we aimed to introduce her organically, avoiding the impression that she was simply added from the old series without purpose. Joe, Kelsey, and I collaborated to ensure a natural reason for her inclusion. We decided that Roz’s daughter Alice is now studying at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, which allows her to be around Boston more frequently. Consequently, we can utilize this situation in creative ways, as Alice appears in several episodes and becomes a part of the group. This provides us with an opportunity to delve deeper into the next generation of characters from the original series.

In the Season 1 finale, Roz’s daughter Alice was briefly introduced, but now we learn that she’s following in her father Frasier’s footsteps by moving to the East Coast to study architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design, similar to how Frasier returned to his old “Cheers” neighborhood. This season, we’ll get to know Alice better as Kelsey Grammer’s daughter Greer takes on the role. It seems there may be romantic tension between her and Jack Cutmore-Scott’s Freddy Crane, Frasier’s son. The change in Alice’s environment provides a reason for Peri Gilpin to reappear as Roz more frequently, and it also coincides with a time when Roz is contemplating leaving Seattle.

Regardless of how Roz’s story unfolds in the second season of Frasier, it’s delightful to know that Peri Gilpin enjoyed working alongside Toks Olagundoye, Anders Keith, Jess Salgueiro, and Nicholas Lyndhurst during the main cast of the Frasier revival. When I asked her about creating chemistry with these actors, she replied that it was a enjoyable experience for her.

Each interaction was uniquely engaging and distinctively different for every individual, showcasing not only their exceptional acting skills but also their warm, open-hearted personalities. From the get-go, we quickly discovered common ground between us. Overall, it’s been an enriching experience that I truly enjoyed.

In Season 2 of “Frasier”, you’ll notice the comeback of Dan Butler as Bob “Bulldog” Briscoe and Edward Hibbert as Gil Chesterton, who will make their appearances in an episode when Frasier Crane returns to Seattle. Also returning is Harriet Harris, reprising her role as Frasier’s agent Bebe Glazer, who will be joined by her on-screen daughter Phoebe, portrayed by Rachel Bloom. Joining the cast this season are Yvette Nicole Brown, Amy Sedaris, and Patricia Heaton, a co-star of Kelsey Grammer from “Back to You”.

On Thursday, September 19, catch the first two episodes of Season 2 for the show “Frasier” on Paramount+. The rest of the season, eight more episodes, will be made available weekly. If you’d like to revisit the original “Frasier” or “Cheers”, make your way to the same streaming service!
