Freakier Friday Trailer Sparks Déjà Vu With Another Recent Body Swap Movie

I’m eagerly anticipating the release of “Freakier Friday,” not just because of my admiration for Jamie Lee Curtis as the current Scream Queen or Lindsay Lohan’s recent resurgence in showbiz. In fact, I had quite enjoyed the 2003 film adaptation of Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel, which was a standout among body swap movies for me (and that’s saying something, trust me). Furthermore, I try to approach these long-awaited and arguably unnecessary sequels with an open mind, and this upcoming Disney production is no exception.

Upon viewing the initial trailer for this fantasy-comedy, I must admit that there’s a certain ambivalence creeping in, and it isn’t because Curtis appears to be sporting her iconic wig from the “Halloween” series. The issue lies with the plot of “Freakier Friday,” which I appreciate for its originality as it departs from the original film’s events. However, it seems that the creators may have underestimated the novelty of their approach, making it less innovative than intended. Let me clarify…

Freakier Friday And Family Switch Both Involve Two Adults Swapping Bodies With Two Teens

In the movie “Freaky Friday” released in 2003, Dr. Tess Coleman (played by Curtis) unexpectedly finds herself inhabiting her rebellious teenage daughter Anna’s (Lohan) body, and vice versa. In a subsequent installment, instead of exchanging places again, Anna switches with her own daughter Harper (Butters), while Tess trades lives with Lily (Hammons), who is about to become her stepdaughter. If the concept of a family member switching bodies wasn’t already explored in “Family Switch” just a few years prior, I would consider this twist quite intriguing…

2023’s Netflix original film directed by McG features Jennifer Garner as Jess Walker, who finds herself in a familiar role akin to her character in ’13 Going on 30′. In this story, she and her husband, Bill (played by Ed Helms), exchange bodies with their teenage children, CC (portrayed by Emma Myers) and Wyatt (Brady Noon). This isn’t entirely a new twist in this genre as both adults and two teenagers are involved in the body swap. However, the plot diverges from ‘Freaky Friday’ and ‘Family Switch’, as their toddler son, Miles, and their dog, Pickles, also undergo a swap. It remains to be seen if the movie delves into this unique aspect or not, as it could potentially open up a broader discussion.

Admittedly, It’s Hard To Make A Truly Original Body Swap Movie

It’s important to point out that I firmly believe the resemblances between these two films are entirely coincidental, given that _Freakier Friday_ was publicly announced back in mid-2023 (THR being the source) well before _Family Switch_ aired in November. Frankly, it seems unfortunate for the sequel of _Freaky Friday_, as its concept could have been more captivating if it hadn’t been launched so closely to the Netflix film. Fortunately, they won’t be hitting the screens in the same year; unlike what transpired with body swap movies such as _Vice Versa_ and _18 Again_ back in 1988.

Not only do I sympathize with director Nisha Ganatra and screenwriter Jordan Neiss, who are challenged with creating a novel take on the body-swap genre, but it’s also true that this subgenre seldom veers from its conventional formula. Only a few body swap movies have managed to deliver something innovative, like 1997’s iconic action film Face/Off (where John Travolta and Nicolas Cage’s characters undergo physical transformations), the old-school slasher movie spin-off Freaky, or Netflix’s overlooked It’s What’s Inside (which features an experimental device causing simultaneous swaps among multiple people as part of a game gone awry).

Just like I’ve mentioned before, even if a movie’s idea feels familiar, it’s crucial for its execution to be unique. In this case, I’m hoping that the much-anticipated sequel, Freakier Friday, will deliver on its promise of being a watch worth your time.
