Movies featuring character swaps, despite their humorous nature, touch upon profound themes at the heart of human experience. They provoke questions about identity, the essence of self, and the concept of a human soul. They invite us to ponder what it means to be oneself when faced with a doppelganger who harbors another’s consciousness. They also challenge our reactions to unexpected situations, such as encountering someone who appears to be Jamie Lee Curtis in the body of a high school girl. These themes explore the complexities of human existence.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the upcoming sequel to the classic film “Freaky Friday,” titled “Freakier Friday.” This sequel takes the original’s doubling theme to a whole new level. Instead of just two characters, Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, we have four women from different generations swapping identities. That’s right! We now have a quartet of women – young and old – trading places! The fresh faces in this tale are portrayed by the talented Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons.
Watch the trailer for the new Freakier Friday below:
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but express my longing for a magical appearance by the exceptional Jodie Foster, even though she graced a completely different take on “Freaky Friday” (Disney first brought this story to life from the Mary Rodgers novel in 1976, while the Curtis/Lohan version hit screens in 2003). I’m hopeful that one day, she will make a cameo in some way, paving the way for an anticipated sequel titled “Freakiest Friday” in the future.
Here is the film’s official synopsis:
In this movie, Curtis and Lohan resume their characters as Tess and Anna Coleman. The plot unfolds years following an identity crisis experienced by Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan). Now, Anna has a daughter and is about to gain a stepdaughter. As they deal with the complexities that arise when two families unite, Tess and Anna find out that perhaps some incidents can occur more than once. “Freakier Friday” is helmed by Nisha Ganatra and is adapted from Mary Rodgers’ book “Freaky Friday”.
Freakier Friday is scheduled to open in theaters on August 8.
The 10 Best Sequels of the Last 10 Years (2015-2024)
10. Magic Mike XXL (2015)
As a movie enthusiast, I must say that watching XXL back-to-back with Magic Mike, I can confidently assert that the former surpasses the original in many aspects. By streamlining the storyline and omitting characters like Alex Pettyfer and Matthew McConaughey, the drug-and-greed narrative, which plagued the second half of Magic Mike, is eliminated. This change not only shortens the runtime but also expands the screen time for the lesser-known Kings of Tampa, transforming them from marginal figures into a cohesive ensemble.
Whereas the first movie primarily focused on business, XXL shifts its attention to pure pleasure. This shift is particularly evident in the introduction of more dynamic female characters who are not mere marks for the Kings. Instead, these men seem less interested in scoring and more invested in self-expression. Gone are the stripper stereotypes; instead, they’ve adopted dances and personas that genuinely reflect their identities.
The reprisal of “Pony” in XXL is a testament to this shift. Unlike the performance at Xquisite in Magic Mike, where Channing Tatum danced for tips, here he performs for the sheer joy of it. The audience is the only one watching, adding an intimate and personal touch to the dance number that easily ranks among the greatest of the century.
9. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
In the grand expansion of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” this upcoming sequel titled “Across the Spider-Verse” introduces Miles Morales to Spider-Man 2099 and his “Spider Society.” This group is determined to safeguard the multiverse from threats such as the Spot, a new villain with the ability to create interdimensional portals on demand. While “Into the Spider-Verse” was visually stunning, “Across the Spider-Verse” promises an even more impressive and daring presentation. For instance, the world of Spider-Gwen resembles a living watercolor painting, while Spider-Man India originates from a vibrant cityscape known as “Mumbattan,” which is a whirlpool of yellows and greens. The one potential drawback of “Across the Spider-Verse” is that it serves as the first part of a two-part story, making it feel somewhat incomplete at times.
8. Jackass Forever (2022)
In an unmatched sequel of the past decade, the wittiest and most imaginative comedians known for their dumb humor have come together once more, delivering a fresh serving of daring stunts, harmless pranks, and a staggering count of male frontal nudity in mainstream cinema. With age advancing to their 40s and 50s, the Jackass crew might be losing a bit of physical agility, but they’ve never been funnier. New additions to the team, such as Rachel Wolfson and Sean “Poopies” McInerney, have shown remarkable resilience in enduring scorpion stings and exposure to revolting bodily fluids. If this proves to be their final Jackass production, they certainly ended on a high note. (It’s quite easy to achieve a high note after receiving a crotch hit.)
7. John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum (2019)
In a breathtaking fashion, the entirety of “John Wick: Chapter 3” stands out, but its initial 40 minutes are arguably the finest example of pure cinema from the past decade. During these minutes, Keanu Reeves’ unstoppable assassin flees New York City not only by running, cycling, and horseback riding, but also by literally killing a man with a book. John Wick, despite being excommunicated, has left an indelible mark on my heart, and I have the feeling we will cross paths again soon, at least on this list.

6. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I must say that Blade Runner 2049 miraculously pulled off an extraordinary feat – continuing the narrative of one of the most cherished science-fiction tales without resolving the enigma that made the original so captivating. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, this stunning extension of Ridley Scott’s vision for a desolate future not only modernized its dystopian technology but also preserved the visual aesthetic of the first film. Moreover, Harrison Ford delivered an emotionally resonant performance in Blade Runner 2049 – one that ranks among his best in recent years as Rick Deckard. Ford’s return to the Blade Runner universe seems like a continuation of one of the movie’s most profound themes: In even the darkest of times, it’s never too late for a moment of good.
5. John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
In the “John Wick” franchise, while Chapter 4 may not have wrapped up the story entirely, it undeniably reached its peak moment – literally so in the movie’s finale, where Keanu Reeves as John Wick battles his way to the top of a colossal staircase that ascends to the Sacré-Cœur church in Paris. At a lengthy three hours, packed with action sequences that could easily fill three films, “John Wick: Chapter 4” finds its protagonist traversing the globe, seeking a means to finally put an end to his brutal conflict with the High Table. Reeves yet again demonstrates his skill as both a graceful and emotional anti-hero, this time partnered by the series’ most impressive lineup of action stars: Scott Adkins, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, and particularly Donnie Yen as the blind swordsman/assassin Caine. It remains a mystery to me how Reeves and director Chad Stahelski could surpass this achievement, but I eagerly anticipate their future attempts.
4. Mission: Impossible — Fallout (2018)
In essence, the movie “Fallout” brings together the most thrilling aspects from all the previous “Mission: Impossible” films. You’ve got fast-paced action sequences, snappy dialogues, jaw-dropping visuals that will leave you in awe, unexpected storyline twists, complex character loyalties, and a touch of romantic tension between Ethan Hunt, Ilsa Faust, and Julia, his wife. Just like Tom Cruise, the protagonist, performs helicopter flights and HALO jumps, though not necessarily in that sequence. Frankly, considering it’s Tom Cruise we’re discussing, it’s surprising he didn’t try to perform a HALO jump onto a moving helicopter and then fly it himself!
3. Creed (2015)
In this sequel-remake titled “Creed”, Sylvester Stallone’s character Rocky Balboa assumes a mentor role, similar to Mickey, training Adonis “Donnie” Creed (played by Michael B. Jordan), the son of his late rival Apollo Creed. The standout film in the series, “Creed”, follows Donnie as he leaves a secure career in finance to pursue his dream and uphold his father’s legacy by becoming a boxer.
Director and co-writer Ryan Coogler drew inspiration from the extensive history of the “Rocky” franchise to create a character study that rivals the original film. The fights, expertly directed and choreographed, are the best in the series. The “Rocky” series has always been about the victory of perseverance, emphasizing that going the distance is more significant than winning. After many years, with “Creed”, the franchise has once again reached its artistic peaks, standing tall atop the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
2. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
It’s challenging to imagine a less crucial movie in the 2020s than a sequel to Top Gun. However, against all odds, director Joseph Kosinski and actor-producer Tom Cruise managed to create a Top Gun sequel that was not just entertaining and action-packed but also resonated with our contemporary society – although not politically, it certainly spoke to the desire for visually stunning experiences that can only be appreciated on a large screen. In today’s world, this could be considered an unconventional perspective.
