As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must confess that the news of another revival for Friday Night Lights has left me with a mixed bag of emotions. On one hand, the original series was nothing short of a masterpiece, and it’s always heartening to see such compelling stories being given a second life. On the other hand, I find myself echoing the sentiments of Jeffrey Reiner – do we really need another Friday Night Lights?
Initially, a much-loved book took the lead. Afterwards, it was followed by a highly praised movie version. Subsequently, a popular television series spin-off emerged. And now, plans seem to suggest another TV series for the franchise, which is Friday Night Lights, following its successful run from 2006 to 2011. The show’s executive producer, Jeffrey Reiner, and leading actress Connie Britton, have both shared their thoughts on the enduring success of the series in interviews with MovieWeb, as fans still relish watching it in reruns and on various streaming services.
In a conversation about his latest movie “Lake George,” Reiner expressed an indirect opinion regarding the potential revival of the show, using an intriguing phrase that seems to say a lot without actually saying much. When asked about the subject, he said, “I’m not sure. It’s like, that’s how the business works. It’s like, is another Friday Night Lights truly necessary? Why?” implying that there might be no need for another iteration of the show. In essence, he didn’t want to comment on it directly.
Reiner went on to explain how the remarkable O.G. show impacted him in unique ways:
The series has undoubtedly had the greatest impact on my professional journey. It was truly an extraordinary experience, albeit one that left a mark on many of us involved due to… we were a tiny, under-the-radar production that never caused any network problems, and we managed to produce it at minimal cost. Yet, we repeatedly defied every rule in television production, making it feel like crafting independent films week after week. I believe there’s no better learning experience than working on this groundbreaking TV show.
What Tami Taylor Is Doing After ‘Friday Night Lights’
During an interview with MovieWeb as she launched her latest thriller “Here After”, Britton speculated about what might have become of her beloved “Friday Night Lights” character Tami Taylor if the show had continued past its 2011 finale, which showed her moving from Texas to Philadelphia.
Britton suggested that it seems likely to him that they have returned to Texas already. He also feels that Tami, who played a role in the series, wasn’t truly a Philadelphia person. Instead, he believes she might be attending Southern Methodist University (SMU) or similar institution now. He isn’t sure, but it appears to him that they are back in Texas. However, she is probably still holding a high position at a college or university.
