As a die-hard Friday Night Lights fan who grew up with the original series and still cherish those moments of small-town Texas spirit, grit, and heartache, I couldn’t be more thrilled to hear about this reboot! The return of Jason Katims, Peter Berg, and Brian Grazer is like a dream come true for us devoted fans. The new logline sounds promising, and if the hurricane adds another layer of struggle and resilience to our beloved Dillon Panthers, it’s bound to be just as captivating as the original.
On streaming platform Peacock, the beloved, nostalgic football series from the 2000s, Friday Night Lights, will be making a comeback as a reboot.
In the works at NBCUniversal, this upcoming TV series is titled, “A High School Football Team’s Unlikely Quest for Texas State Championship After a Hurricane: Rising as Hope for Their Town.” The return of Jason Katims, the original showrunner and executive producer, can be expected. Additionally, original director and executive producer Peter Berg, along with Brian Grazer, the original executive producer, will also be back on board.
Originally airing in 2006, Friday Night Lights spanned over five seasons. This popular series was based on H. G. Bissinger’s 1990 novel of the same name and was previously adapted into a film in 2004 featuring Billy Bob Thornton. Kyle Chandler portrayed coach Eric Taylor, who guided a high school football team in the fictional town of Dillon, Texas. Notable cast members included Connie Britton, Taylor Kitsch, Minka Kelly, Zach Gilford, Jesse Plemons, Michael B. Jordan, and Jurnee Smollett. As of now, it’s uncertain if any original cast members will return. The series garnered 14 Emmy nominations during its run, with Chandler winning best actor in a drama in 2011 and Katims receiving an award for best writing the same year. Keep an eye out for updates!
