Friends Vet Lisa Kudrow Told Us Why It Was ‘Heaven’ Working With Taika Waititi And Jemaine Clement On Apple TV+’s Time Bandits Series

As a long-time gamer and a fan of both television and time travel stories, I couldn’t be more excited about Apple TV+’s new series “Time Bandits,” based on Terry Gilliam’s classic 1981 movie. Having grown up watching Lisa Kudrow shine in her iconic role as Phoebe Buffay on “Friends,” I never imagined I would see her starring in a time travel adventure.

Lisa Kudrow is well-known for her role as Phoebe Buffay in “Friends,” but she’s now taking on a new challenge: starring in a modern adaptation of the timeless film “Time Bandits” by Terry Gilliam. This classic time travel fantasy, originally released in 1981, is being revived as an Apple TV+ series. The project is led by the creative geniuses behind projects like “Thor: Ragnarok,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” and “The Inbetweeners” – Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement, and Iain Morris. Before its debut on July 24, 2024, Kudrow spoke with TopMob about her experience working with this gifted team, describing it as a truly enjoyable experience.

I’ve been absolutely blown away by Taika Waititi’s impressive body of television work lately. From “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Reservation Dogs,” to his latest project, “Our Flag Means Death,” he never fails to deliver something unique and captivating. Now, he’s bringing us the story of a motley crew of time-traveling thieves, led by Lisa Kudrow as Penelope. When I had the chance to chat with Kudrow about her experience working with Waititi and Clement on “Time Bandits,” she shared:

Absolutely, Iain Morris added an exciting element to that experience. From the very first day of filming, there was a sense of freedom to experiment and improvise. Jemaine Clement would occasionally approach actors with new line suggestions, encouraging us to try out different approaches. The entire atmosphere was enjoyable and full of creativity.

It’s great to hear that for an actor, the experience with “Time Bandits” seems perfect. As a seasoned actor from “Friends,” she appreciated the collaborative nature of the project. In this setting, actors were encouraged to explore and innovate, yet they also had the support of the creators’ proven comedic skills. The actress added:

As someone who has spent years working in film production, I can tell you that every project is a unique journey filled with twists and turns. One particular memory comes to mind when I think about the importance of flexibility and adaptability in our line of work.

Lisa Kudrow placed great faith in those around her, as evidenced by her role in “Time Bandits.” Watching the initial episodes of this Apple TV+ production (currently streamable), it’s amusing to recall Kudrow’s comments regarding Penelope and Kevin’s interactions. The young Kevin, skillfully portrayed by Kal-El Tuck, is both useful to the bandits and critical of their situation. This dynamic results in some genuinely entertaining scenes between Kudrow and Tuck’s characters.

The team responsible for creating “Time Bandits” and including Lisa Kudrow have demonstrated their comedic skills. According to descriptions of the collaboration between the actors and production team, it seems like an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Two out of the five initially released episodes of “Time Bandits” on Apple TV+ are currently available for viewing. Apple TV+ is an exceptional streaming platform to consider, and every week, they add two more episodes for your enjoyment.
