From Saying No to Drugs, Losing “15 Kilos” and Counting His Lovers: ‘Queer’ Director Luca Guadagnino Gets Candid in Venice

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for unconventional narratives and raw performances, I couldn’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation upon hearing about Luca Guadagnino‘s latest offering, “Queer.” The director’s candid approach to storytelling, coupled with the star-studded cast, promises a cinematic experience that is bound to leave an indelible mark.

Wait, did he really just say that?

He carried out the action, and it seems Luca Guadagnino doesn’t have any concerns. During a packed press conference for his latest movie titled “Queer” on Tuesday afternoon, the director spoke openly and frankly, which was met with great interest from the journalists who were eager to hear more.

As a gamer, I can’t wait to attend the 2024 Venice Film Festival where I’ll be one of the first to witness the world premiere of that thrilling movie on an early Tuesday evening! I’ll be there alongside stars like Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, and Omar Apollo. We’ll all be there with the Italian filmmaker, celebrating his latest cinematic adventure together.

A middle-aged American expatriate named William resides in solitude within Mexico City. Struggling with an addiction to opiates and alcohol, along with a preference for younger companions, the character Eugene Allerton from Starkey, stirs chaos within him. As Craig’s character becomes more enamored, Eugene consents to embark on a journey with him. Naturally, given that it’s Luca Guadagnino, the trip is filled with sensual moments and even includes some explicit sex scenes.

When asked about the film’s theme of addiction, Guadagnino shared some personal insights. He admitted to being a person who generally leads a disciplined lifestyle, never using drugs or smoking cigarettes, and recently lost 15 pounds through diet. He also mentioned that he has had only a few romantic relationships in his life.

He further expressed: “Today, we’re speaking honestly. I admire the notion of perceiving individuals without prejudice, ensuring that even the most unfortunate individual is the one with whom you establish a connection.”

The situation became tricky when the director was questioned about casting Craig, famously known as the contemporary James Bond, in the movie ‘Queer’, and if Ian Fleming’s character could potentially be a gay man. Seizing this chance, Guadagnino instead commended the British actor on his talent.

“Guys, let’s be adults in the room for a second,” he said. “There is no way around the fact that nobody would ever know what James Bond desires, period. “The important thing is that he does his missions properly. Having said that, I have been an admirer of this gentleman for a long time. … I had this intuition that I suffocated within me because I’m pragmatic. You have to make movies; you cannot daydream. A gentleman that was in the [casting] room was really the one that was not pragmatic and said to me, ‘What about Daniel Craig?’ And I said, ‘I thought about him, but he’s never going to say yes.’ And he said to me, ‘Let’s ask.’ And he said yes. And the yes was a definitive yes, he’s one of the greatest actors. It’s a privilege to work with someone like him.”

“He shared that the motivation behind making the film was this remarkable individual standing before us. For quite some time, he’d harbored a desire to collaborate with him. They initially crossed paths twenty years ago and mused about potentially working together. At last, their dream became a reality, and he found it truly delightful.”

The film “Queer” is based on a novel by William S. Burroughs, which the Italian considered to be ripe for detailed cinematic adaptation. Guadagnino pondered, “What are we when we’re alone, and who are we seeking? Who do we yearn to be with regardless of their identity? Are you a drug addict residing in Mexico City? What are you when you’re all alone in that bed, grappling with the sensation of having loved someone else?”

24 Studios secured the American distribution rights for the film “Queer” prior to its world premiere at Venice. They intend to release it before the year ends, with the production being a joint effort between Fremantle, Fremantle North America, Lorenzo Mieli’s The Apartment, and Luca Guadagnino’s Frenesy Film Company, in partnership with Cinecitta and Frame by Frame.
