As a die-hard John Wick fan, I must say that the upcoming spin-off, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, has me absolutely thrilled! The trailer alone is enough to send chills down my spine, and the prospect of seeing Keanu Reeves back as the infamous Baba Yaga is a dream come true.
In the debut trailer for “John Wick: Ballerina,” we delve deeper into the expansive universe previously dominated by Keanu Reeves’ character. Titled “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,” this new installment stars Anna de Armas, a familiar face from “Knives Out” and “Bond” films, as Rooney, a ballet dancer turned assassin seeking retribution. Catch a glimpse of Reeves reprising his role as Baba Yaga in the trailer for “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” below.
Under the masterful direction of Chad Stahelski, renowned for his high-octane films such as the Underworld series, Total Recall, and Die Hard 4, I found myself captivated by Ballerina – a film he co-scripted with Shay Hatten, along with Emerald Fennell. This intriguing story unfolds in the gap between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, focusing on the journey of ballet-turned-assassin Rooney, played by Ana de Armas, as she seeks vengeance against those who took her family’s lives.
As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Ana de Armas, who stole the spotlight in No Time to Die and Blonde, will take center stage for an upcoming project. Joining her is none other than Keanu Reeves, reprising his iconic role from the John Wick series. The stellar cast also includes Ian McShane and Anjelica Huston, both revisiting their roles from Ballerina, with this film marking the final on-screen appearance of the talented Lance Reddick as Charon. The ensemble also features Gabriel Byrne (known for The Usual Suspects and Hereditary), Norman Reedus (a familiar face from The Walking Dead), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Dune), and Catalina Sandino Moreno (From, Maria Full of Grace).
Ana de Armas isn’t new to action-packed roles; she made a significant impact in Daniel Craig’s final James Bond film, “No Time to Die,” which earned an Oscar nomination. Yet, the actress has shared that stepping into the world of John Wick was even more intense compared to her experience with 007, and she hinted at an exciting confrontation between her character and Reeves’ dog-loving assassin.
I was grumbling because I was hurting and had bruises. However, the stunt we were rehearsing the other day with Keanu was incredibly challenging. This guy wasn’t just rolling and tossing me around, but performing extraordinary stunts! After witnessing his skill firsthand, I realized I couldn’t keep complaining because he really is exceptional – truly the best.
Donnie Yen Will Return for Another John Wick Spin-off
The movie titled “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” marks the start of numerous anticipated spin-offs within the John Wick universe. Among them, the one generating the most buzz is the Donnie Yen-starring film, which sees him reprising his role as the blind assassin Caine. Caine made his debut in “John Wick: Chapter 4“. The Hong Kong-set spin-off, slated for production next year, will not disclose its official plot details but it is known that it will progress Yen’s character arc post the events of “Chapter 4“, with Caine being released from his bondage to the High Table.
Yen expressed his enthusiasm about being part of John Wick: Chapter 4 in a statement, stating that working on these films has been extraordinary due to the collective efforts of Chad, Basil, Erica, and himself. They all strive to bring action sequences, fights, and stunts that are not just thrilling, innovative, and artistic but also reflect character development, plot, and emotion. John Wick’s complex character with a troubled past is what excites Yen the most about reprising his role.
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina
is scheduled to be released on June 6, 2025.
