FX Releases ’Shogun’ Season 2 Details, Sets Production Start Date

As a dedicated gamer, I’m hyped to hear that FX is planning to dive back into the world of feudal Japan! They’ve officially set a production start date for season two of their critically acclaimed series, Shogun. Can’t wait to see what epic battles and captivating stories lie ahead!

Production for the second season of the award-winning series, which garnered an impressive 18 Emmy awards last year, is scheduled to start in Vancouver next January, 2026. This announcement officially confirms that a second season will indeed take place, following FX’s announcement in May, 2024 about the development of two more episodes.

Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, as co-creators and showrunners, have concluded a writer’s meeting for the upcoming season. This new season is expected to take its inspiration from the James Clavell novel that served as the basis for season one.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that FX has unveiled the initial glimpse of what Shōgun season two will shape up to be. According to FX, the series will resume ten years after the events of the first season, delving deeper into the historically-inspired tale of these two characters from distinct realms whose destinies are inextricably linked.

Hiroyuki Sanada, who bagged the Emmy for Best Lead Actor in Drama last year, is set to once again embody Lord Yoshii Toranaga. Additionally, Cosmo Jarvis will reappear as English sailor John Blackthorne, whose Japan-bound voyage after a shipwreck forms the narrative basis. As of now, these two are the only returning actors confirmed for season two; FX is yet to reveal any additional casting details.

Sanada is set to take on an executive producer role in the upcoming second season of ‘Shogun’, collaborating with Kondo, Marks, Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, and Michael De Luca. Meanwhile, Jarvis will share the co-executive producer position. The production studio for this series is FX Productions.

Beyond its impressive Emmy awards, the show Shōgun is also the most viewed program in FX’s entire history, as reported by the Disney-owned network. This series, which was initially aired on FX’s cable channel and later streamed on Hulu, held a spot on Nielsen’s streaming charts for 10 weeks last year, accumulating a total of 4.27 billion minutes of viewership during that period (along with additional, unannounced viewership after it fell out of the top 10 original series). The season one cast included Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow, Fumi Nikaido, and others.
