As a lifelong enthusiast of historical dramas, I must say that the success of FX’s Shōgun has left me absolutely awestruck! Having spent countless hours immersed in the intricacies of historical fiction, it’s always heartening to see a series that not only captures the essence of its time but also manages to redefine the genre. The way this show has effortlessly blended authenticity with drama is truly commendable.
It’s no real shock, but FX’s popular historical drama Shōgun has swept this year’s Creative Arts Emmys, setting a significant milestone along the way. Adapted from James Clavell’s novel, the series chronicles the story of John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), who gets stranded in Japan during the 1600s. Captured by the local lord, Blackthorne becomes a chess piece in the power struggle between Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and the four ruling lords. The show has garnered critical acclaim and boasts a remarkable 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
At the two-day awards ceremony held on September 7 and 8, Shōgun surpassed the record for the most awards won by a single TV season. By the end of the event, Shōgan had amassed a total of 14 awards. The Creative Arts Emmys honor outstanding technical accomplishments in television from the past year, preceding the Primetime Emmys on September 15, where Shōgun is also projected to excel. Furthermore, the weekend was significant for FX as The Bear won seven awards for Season 2, and FX took home a total of 27 Creative Arts Emmys throughout the weekend.
In the awards ceremony, Shogun clinched titles such as ‘Guest Actor in a Drama Series’, ‘Casting for a Drama Series’, ‘Period Costumes for a Series’, ‘Stunt Performance’, ‘Production Design For a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program’, and ‘Picture Editing for a Drama Series’. However, there has been some controversy surrounding its victories. While the series indeed deserves these accolades, it was initially marketed as a Limited Series. Yet, when FX announced plans for additional seasons, the show’s category was adjusted to align with its new classification.
Shōgun Season 2 & 3 Are in Development
The extraordinary achievement of Shōgun left studio executives at FX with little choice but to consider future seasons. The first season accurately translated James Clavell’s extensive novel into a series, and in some cases, even enhanced its less-developed aspects. In contrast, Seasons 2 and 3, which are now being planned, will deviate from the original book, continuing the tale of Lord Toranaga instead.
Based on information from the lead actor and executive producer Hiroyuki Sanada, work has commenced on Season 2 of the show “Shōgun”. Clavell’s novel was significantly influenced by actual historical events, yet it added dramatic elements to these facts. Since there isn’t a second novel, Season 2 will delve directly into history, focusing on the 300 years of peace that ensued after Tokugawa Ieyasu’s (the real person behind the character Toranaga) power struggles. Sanada clarified this point:
Although we no longer possess the original novel from our first season, we’ve got a knack for storytelling. Plus, we have authentic historical events as our guides. This means we’re well-informed about what truly transpired in the past. We’re now gearing up to start crafting our new narrative. Our writing room is open and ready!
As of now, no specific dates have been given for the airing of Seasons 2 and 3 of “Shogun”. However, you can watch Season 1 right now on Hulu.
