Gabrielle Union rose to fame in some of the top ’90s teen films such as “She’s All That” and “10 Things I Hate About You,” not to mention her memorable role as Isis in “Bring It On.” However, the accomplished actress shares that when she began her career in Hollywood, she made a less-than-wise decision with her first paycheck.
When you get a larger-than-usual paycheck from a new job, it’s normal to feel inclined to spend freely. To put it into perspective, Chris Pratt shared that he squandered $75K from his first substantial income within just two months, only to be taken aback when it had vanished entirely.
Gabrielle Union promptly invested her substantial earnings, rather than letting them idle away. At the American Black Film Festival in Miami (as reported by People), the star of “Being Mary Jane” openly discussed a frivolous purchase she made with her initial paycheck. Given that she was an aspiring actress then, I can empathize with her decision.
I thought I had really made it when I bought a brand new Mazda Miata with leather seats on its black-on-black exterior from the Mazda dealership. My father advised me not to, saying that a new car loses value as soon as you drive it off the lot. However, I couldn’t resist the allure of the luxury leather seats, despite burning myself every time I got out in Los Angeles’ heat. So, that was my first big purchase, and it sure did lose its value immediately after I drove it away!
Sitting on a scorching hot car seat during a drive isn’t enjoyable at all. To avoid this discomfort, it would be wise to purchase some sun shades for your windshield.
It’s clear why Gabrielle Union might feel inclined to buy her dream car after earning a substantial amount in Hollywood. However, just as her father advised, investing in a new car can be risky due to factors like maintenance costs, depreciation, and uncomfortable leather seats. It’s not pleasant to acknowledge, but sometimes our parents do have valid points.

It seems plausible that when Gabrielle Union referred to her first significant paycheck, she might have been alluding to her outstanding debut in the movie “Bring It On.” Although her initial major film role was in “She’s All That,” it was her memorable portrayal of Isis in “Bring It On” that truly showcased her talent. Facing off against Kirsten Dunst, Union delivered sharp, witty lines that underscored her potential as a leading actress. Given the impressive performance she put forth in this role, it’s not hard to imagine that she earned a substantial amount for it.
At 50 years old, Gabrielle Union finds it understandable to label her initial significant paycheck splurge on a Mazda as “foolish.” Yet, we’re all fallible. Given the many successful movies she produced early in her career and the continued excellence since then, Gabrielle Union’s worth within Hollywood has undeniably risen. As an actress, producer, and the proprietor of a thriving hair products business, the BET Award nominee boasts numerous accomplishments that overshadow her initial lavish car purchase as a mere footnote today.
