Janus Films secured the rights for the North American release of Lav Diaz’s extensive historical drama, “Magellan”, which premiered outside of the main competition at Cannes Film Festival.
In a 160-minute movie directed by renowned Filipino filmmaker Diaz, who is famous for movies such as “The Woman Who Left” and “From What Is Before”, Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal portrays the main character, the Portuguese explorer.
In a nutshell, Bernal, who was both tyrannical and occasionally misguided, managed to convince the Spanish Monarchy to finance his daring 16th-century voyage aimed at discovering the legendary Eastern lands. However, this expedition ultimately paved the way for a ten-year period of destruction in the Pacific region, as European conquerors, led by Bernal and others, embarked on their colonial conquests.
The film’s creators describe the journey as more challenging than anticipated, with food shortages and mutiny testing the crew to their breaking points. Upon arriving at the Malayan Islands, Magellan experiences a shift in his mindset. He develops an unhealthy fixation on conquest and conversion, which leads to disturbances that he can’t contain. This portrayal doesn’t glorify Magellan’s voyage; instead, it presents the reality of his journey.
Earlier, Janus Films acquired the films scheduled for Cannes in 2025: “Resurrection” directed by Bi Gan and “The Love That Remains,” helmed by Hlynur Pálmason.
Janus Films expressed excitement about their recent purchase in a statement: “We’re delighted that Lav Diaz’s work will be seen by a broader North American audience than ever before through his captivating film, ‘Magellan.’ This remarkable collaboration between the contemporary master of Filipino cinema and one of the most soulful actors of his time offers an unparalleled perspective. A vibrant portrayal of significant history on an epic scale, ‘Magellan’ is visually stunning and deeply emotional.
The agreement for distributing the film was made between Janus Films and Luxbox. The production credits for Magellan are jointly held by Rosa Filmes, Andergraun Films, Black Cap Pictures, Ten17P, El Viaje Filmes, Volos Films, Lib Films, and AKP21.
