Actress Gal Gadot, famously known for her role as Wonder Woman, is joining forces with director Niki Caro on an upcoming post-World War II suspenseful movie titled Ruin. Notably, Caro is a renowned New Zealand filmmaker who has previously directed movies like the 2002 hit Whale Rider and the 2017 adaptation of The Zookeeper’s Wife. Her latest project was Netflix’s action thriller The Mother starring Jennifer Lopez. In parallel, Gadot, who gained prominence as the former Wonder Woman in the DC Extended Universe, recently ventured into Disney’s live-action remakes by playing the Evil Queen in Snow White.
According to Variety, Gadot will feature alongside Matthias Schoenaerts (known for The Old Guard and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) in the movie Ruin, with Caro directing. The script is penned by Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo. In this film, Gadot takes on the role of a former prisoner from a post-World War II concentration camp in Germany. Alongside her husband Jaron Varsano, Marc Butan of MadRiver Pictures, and Caro, Gadot will also produce Ruin.
What We Know About Gal Gadot’s Ruin
Gadot Has Been Circling The Project For Years
The screenplay for the movie “Ruin,” initially generating a lot of excitement when it ranked high on the Black List survey in 2017, is written by the same team who created Marvel’s “The Eternals.” Gal Gadot’s character, freshly released from prison in a camp, will join forces with a former German soldier (portrayed by Schoenaerts) in post-war Germany. This alliance aims at avenging a Nazi SS squad, a mission that Gal Gadot had earlier been linked to in an earlier version of the project, initially slated to be directed by Justin Kurzel (“The Order”).
In this instance, the film serves as Caro’s second directorial venture into World War II narratives, with the movie The Zookeeper’s Wife depicting the genuine account of Polish zookeepers Jan and Antonina Żabiński, who saved hundreds of Polish Jews during their nation’s Nazi rule. Simultaneously, Gadot has previously committed to both producing and acting in a retelling of the story surrounding the Polish resistance figure Irena Sendler for Warner Bros.
Our Take On Gadot’s New WWII Thriller
Previous Reports Have Likened The Script To Other Popular Wartime Revenge Films
Although Gadot and Caro both have diverse backgrounds in World War II storytelling, the plot of Ruin appears to be a unique venture distinct from their past projects like The Zookeeper’s Wife or Irena Sandler. Previous speculation compares the script to Quentin Tarantino’s film, Inglourious Basterds, and David Ayer’s movie, Fury.
As a cinephile, I’m eagerly anticipating the gritty, revenge-driven tale that is Ruin. With a storyline that promises to be engaging for both the star and the director, it seems poised to be quite the undertaking. It’ll be intriguing to see if it can reach the same level of acclaim as the films it’s been compared to. However, given the streaming success of Caro’s previous action thriller, she certainly has a strong foundation to bring this new project to life.
