There’s no denying that the portrayal of Galactus in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer differed significantly from his original comic book character, appearing as a sentient cloud instead of a humanoid figure. Thankfully, the latest adaptation of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, due out this July, promises to rectify that issue by giving Galactus, played by Ralph Ineson, a more accurate appearance based on his comics depiction. Moreover, it’s refreshing to learn that the filmmakers behind the Marvel movie have opted for methods other than just motion-capture technology to bring their rendition of the World Devourer to life.
Instead of solely relying on a motion capture suit for Ineson’s Galactus performance and creating the character’s appearance entirely through CGI, the director Matt Shakman chose to have the actor don purple and blue armor during filming. He explained this decision to Entertainment Weekly saying:
“It was essential for our actor to physically wear the purple and blue armor on set while performing the character.
Instead of solely relying on motion-capture technology, I opted for a more personal approach by having an actor embody Galactus. To achieve this, we’ve constructed a full costume for him and conducted extensive photography tests to determine aspects like the appropriate scale and how to film locations such as Mount Rushmore effectively.

The No. 1 Challenge Fantastic Four: First Steps Faced Is Not What I Expected, But Makes Sense
Chris Evans and Michael B. Jordan have previously portrayed the Human Torch, but Joseph Quinn from Fantastic Four understands what makes his version ‘attractive’.
As a devoted fan, I must admit that during my viewing of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, I had reservations about Galactus’ towering presence. However, what truly impressed me was Jon M. Chu’s dedication in ensuring Ralph Ineson physically embodied Galactus during filming. This practical approach aided greatly in visualizing how this cosmic menace should manifest in live-action. The article also mentioned that the costume department was brimming with various attempts to perfect his iconic appearance. While Galactus would’ve undoubtedly been captivating as a motion-capture character alone, the inclusion of practical effects significantly increased the chances of his depiction being the most compelling it could be.
In the initial trailer for “Fantastic Four,” Galactus was shown only from behind, leaving us curious if we’ll get a full view of this massive villain in the upcoming trailers or if it will be saved for the movie’s release in 2025. The same uncertainty applies to Galactus’ herald, The Silver Surfer, although attendees at CinemaCon were given an exclusive preview of Julia Garner’s character from the short film “First Steps“. Mole Man is expected to feature in the movie too, but don’t count on Doctor Doom stirring up trouble, as he is traditionally the Four’s main adversary in the comics.
In “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” actors Ralph Ineson and Julia Garner will be joined by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne, and Sarah Niles. The film hits theaters on July 25th. Don’t miss it!
