Gambit Actor Channing Tatum Still Wants to Revive Project

Gambit Actor Channing Tatum Still Wants to Revive Project

As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who has witnessed the ups and downs of X-Men adaptations over the years, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and cautious optimism regarding Channing Tatum‘s potential solo Gambit movie within the MCU.

Discussions about a movie adaption of Marvel Comics’ character Gambit have been going on for quite some time now. However, before the release of Deadpool and Wolverine, audiences only saw a cinematic portrayal of this character in the poorly received X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Since the idea of a solo Gambit movie surfaced, Channing Tatum’s name has been linked to it.

In 2009, when the role was up for grabs, he wasn’t accessible, thus it was given to Taylor Kitsch who was also rising in fame at the time. However, Channing Tatum had been keen on getting that opportunity since then. Regrettably, it didn’t materialize. Yet, the incredible success of Deadpool and Wolverine, coupled with the humor Tatum brought to his brief portrayal of the character in that film, has reignited talks about a solo project featuring Tatum. At the premiere of his latest movie, Blink Twice, Variety asked him if the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s newest offerings had rekindled his aspirations for a standalone venture.

I sure hope so. From your mouth to God’s ears. Write it into existence, my friend. Please.

They subsequently inquired whether he was involved in any discussions, and his response was affirmative. However, it seems these conversations haven’t progressed much beyond him expressing interest, as suggested by Channing Tatum himself.

Absolutely, my interest hasn’t waned; I’ve been expressing this desire for a decade now. The decision rests with Bob Iger and Kevin Feige. I can only hope for the best.

Why Hasn’t a Gambit Movie Come to Fruition Before?

It is evident that Tatum expressed his desires, as he and his producing partner, Reid Carolin, diligently worked on a Gambit film for four years. However, their efforts were under 20th Century Fox, and the development of the movie was finally halted when Disney acquired that company in 2019.

It might have been advantageous since Fox’s association with the X-Men team didn’t yield consistently positive results. Towards the finale, due to movies like X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix, and The New Mutants, which were met with criticism, their work was more detrimental than beneficial. However, there was an exception – Deadpool (and arguably Deadpool 2) – and given that he’s now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems fitting that this shift could pave the way not just for a Gambit film but one that surpasses the quality of what fans would have experienced earlier.
