George R.R. Martin could be working on multiple potential spin-offs from his “Game of Thrones” series, but it’s important to note that he’s also involved in creating the backstory for the popular video game, “Elden Ring.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating any news about the Elden Ring movie, and now George R.R. Martin himself has shared some insights!
Lands Between on the Big Screen
At the IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin was inquired about the progress of an Elden Ring sequel. Instead of providing a direct answer, he hinted playfully by saying, “I can’t reveal much, but there are whispers about transforming Elden Ring into a movie.
Martin hasn’t disclosed too many specifics regarding the progress of the movie, but he hinted that his focus on writing The Winds of Winter might limit his involvement in the film adaptation. In simpler terms, he suggested that his work on the book could keep him busy and prevent him from being as involved with the movie version.
He mentioned that it remains uncertain if the Elden Ring movie will materialize, as well as the extent of his personal contribution to it. Moreover, he admitted that he is somewhat delayed in finishing his most recent book, which in turn restricts the number of projects he can handle at present.
FromSoftware is Looking for a ‘Strong Partner’
Apart from Martin, other team members associated with Elden Ring have hinted at their enthusiasm for a potential film adaptation. In an interview with The Guardian, FromSoftware’s president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, expressed his interest in the idea.
It’s plausible that Elden Ring, our video game, could be interpreted or transformed into other forms, such as a movie. However, neither I nor FromSoftware possess the expertise or capabilities to create something based on this intellectual property in another medium.
In the event a movie gets produced, Miyazaki notes that they would require a ‘very capable collaborator.’ He adds, “There’d be a need to establish much trust and consensus regarding our shared goals, yet there’s definitely some enthusiasm.
House of the Tarnished

Despite primarily focusing on gameplay and design in Elden Ring, there were opportunities for Martin to enrich the world with background details. These stories weren’t part of the main plot but were subtly conveyed through the numerous information boxes accompanying the items and bosses.
In a new game set in the world of Elden Ring, there is ample opportunity to introduce the key characters of the Lands Between. If we’ve learned anything from Martin’s past work, a rich and detailed backstory provides a solid foundation for multiple spinoffs. The writers have the flexibility to move the timeline around as needed.
It’s clear that Martin has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the progress of “House of the Dragon.” Given this, it seems likely that Elden Ring creators are considering ways to remain faithful to the established lore by George R.R. Martin. Regardless of whether Martin continues with House of the Ice and Fire series, fans eagerly await the completion of his long-delayed book so he can focus on other projects unrelated to it.
As a hardcore gamer, I’ve been eagerly awaiting any news about the Elden Ring movie, but in the meantime, I can’t contain my excitement because the game is now available to play on Xbox One, PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 4|5. Can’t wait to dive into this epic world!
