‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ to Air in 2025

As a devoted fan of the intricate world of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire,” I am absolutely thrilled to hear that we will be graced with yet another captivating series, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” The anticipation is palpable as I eagerly await its arrival in 2026, although I must admit a slight pang of impatience, for I can hardly bear to wait that long.

HBO continues to be involved in the world of “Game of Thrones” for several years to come. On Tuesday, it was announced that a spin-off series called “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” set in Westeros, is expected to air on television in 2026.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about the highly anticipated series, “Dunk and Egg.” Based on recent reports from Variety, it seems that the global streaming chief of Warner Bros. Discovery, JB Perrette, hinted at its release during a tech and media conference hosted by Wells Fargo this past week. However, upon further investigation by Variety’s sources, it appears that the series might be slated for a fourth-quarter premiere in 2026 instead of the previously suggested summer season. So, keep your eyes peeled for more updates on this fascinating tale!

What Is ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ About And How Does It Connect To ‘Game of Thrones’?

Regardless of when, exactly, the show ends up on our screens, the premise of the show will remain the same. Based off a series of novellas from George R.R. Martin, it follows Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Caffey) and his squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), as they traverse the countryside in the years leading up to the aforementioned Egg becoming King Aegon V Targaryen.

The upcoming series is set 90 years prior to George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” saga, creating the foundation for this captivating fantasy universe, following the storyline beyond that of “House of the Dragon.” Joining the previously announced cast members are Henry Ashton as Daeron Targaryen (a different character from the one portrayed in “House of the Dragon”), Edward Ashley as Ser Steffon Fossoway, Youssef Kerkour as Steely Pate, Daniel Monks as Ser Manfred Dondarrion, Shaun Thomas as Raymun Fossoway, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Plummer, and Danny Webb as Ser Arlan of Pennytree.

The group responsible for orchestrating the series is made up of executive producers such as Martin, Ira Parker, Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, Sarah Bradshaw, and Owen Harris, who will also take charge of directing the initial three episodes. Meanwhile, it will be Sarah Adina Smith who will oversee the direction of the remaining three episodes in the series’ inaugural season.

Earlier, HBO stated that the new series will have a unique style and ambiance compared to its predecessors. In fact, according to HBO President Casey Bloys, House of the Dragon is tonally distinct from anything they’ve produced in Westeros before. He mentioned that by intent, we’re adopting a lighter tone, which sets it apart significantly from the previous two series. Additionally, it should be noted that the budget is smaller primarily because there are fewer dragons and significant scenes taking place in open fields or tents rather than grand castles or battlefields.

Martin wrote this about the matter on his own personal blog:

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate the release of KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS, even though it’s not as grandiose as GAME OF THRONES or HOUSE OF THE DRAGON in terms of budget. However, I yearn for its greatness despite the limited resources. The narrative primarily unfolds in an open field, encircled by tents, which means we can do without the extravagant sets seen in the other shows. Yet, the production must avoid any semblance of fake or cheap aesthetics. The costumes, heraldry, and fight sequences need to be nothing short of magnificent. When I finally stepped onto the set, I was overjoyed by what Ira and his team had crafted.

Another day, another knight in Westeros, amirite?
