Gamers convinced Star Wars Eclipse has been cancelled

Gamers convinced Star Wars Eclipse has been cancelled

As a lifelong Star Wars fan who has weathered countless twists and turns in the galaxy far, far away, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease about the fate of Star Wars Eclipse. Much like how the Force is always with us, so too have been the highs and lows of Star Wars games throughout my life. From the triumphs of Knights of the Old Republic to the disappointments of Kinect Star Wars, I’ve learned to take each announcement with a grain of salt.

According to the wise words of Master Yoda, “Either do something or don’t, there is no trying.” However, concerning Star Wars Eclipse, it seems that it might be more appropriate to not do so. After a prolonged period of uncertainty regarding Quantic Dream’s action-adventure game, a significant staff departure raises concerns that the game may have been indefinitely postponed, much like Gina Carano’s exit from The Mandalorian.

Just as any well-known franchise, Star Wars has produced both excellent and less-than-stellar video games throughout its history. Similar to the live-action films, every Knights of the Old Republic or Empire Strikes Back is accompanied by a Kinect Star Wars or Attack of the Clones. Despite the galaxy’s ongoing expansion, Eclipse could find itself isolated in the Outer Rim.

Fans worried Star Wars Eclipse has been axed

According to The Gamer’s report, the project’s Lead Writer, Adam Williams, has parted ways with Quantic Dream, leaving uncertainty about Eclipse’s current status. Although it is conceivable that Williams had finished writing or another team member could take over, the game’s recent lack of updates has raised concerns among fans.

First unveiled at The Game Awards in 2021, Eclipse was disclosed to be in its initial stages of development. Showcasing a polished cinematic trailer, it took us to the era of the High Republic, which is approximately 100 years prior to The Phantom Menace. Notably, this period has recently been explored within the franchise through Leslye Headland’s The Acolyte TV series.

Expressing in a simpler and more conversational manner: Everyone was excited about Eclipse, a new Star Wars video game that might include Yoda and other favorite elements. However, like the cancelled Star Wars 1313, it could turn out to be an incredible game that never gets released, becoming another “What if?” in the Star Wars franchise’s history. The news of Williams leaving is especially concerning when you consider the difficulties the game has faced during development.

Other enthusiasts have voiced similar worries, and when the announcement was made on the r/gaming community forum, quite a few were apprehensive about the outcome. One person posted, “ frankly, I can’t help but be surprised if this game is ever released at all. The initial sneak peek feels more like an emotive visual collage than a concrete demonstration, and it’s been nearly three years of silence since then.”

Another sceptic added, “This game will be cancelled, I feel like it’s a certainty at this point,” while a third concluded, “Feels like both Star Wars (this, KOTOR remake) and DC had been unlucky in gaming department. It’s unfortunate that both are my go to franchise as well.”

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice the silence from Quantic Dream regarding the departure of Guillaume de Fondaumière, who played a crucial role in Eclipse’s development. If I were them and still committed to bringing this game to life, I’d make an announcement soon, as many seem unaware or have speculated that it might have been scrapped. The enthusiasm for Eclipse seems to have waned, but hopefully, we’ll hear more about its future soon.

Although the concept of a AAA game in the High Republic era is exciting, the involvement of Quantic Dream, given its contentious past, raises some concerns. There remains optimism that Eclipse might resurface like Anakin Skywalker after being charred, but with each piece of project news, there’s growing apprehension that it may have already been suffocated by the Force.
