Garry’s Mod Successor is Now Playable After Years of Development

As a long-time fan of Garry’s Mod, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia as I write about Facepunch Studios’ upcoming title, Sandbox. Since 2004, Garry’s Mod has been an integral part of my gaming experience, providing endless hours of entertainment with its unique physics-based sandbox gameplay and iconic memes like “Skibidi Toilet.”

Ever since its debut in 2004, Garry’s Mod has been a standout title on Steam’s marketplace. Though its initial fame may have waned somewhat, the game continues to draw tens of thousands of players daily. Popular modes like DarkRP and Prop Hunt remain crowd-pleasers among fans.

1. Although Garry’s Mod remains an enjoyable PC gameplay experience, Facepunch Studios’ upcoming title appears to be a spiritual successor. Unlike Garry’s Mod, which spawned memes like Skibidi Toilet, the new game seems to blend elements of Garry’s Mod with Roblox, offering users the opportunity to create their own games within a Sandbox environment.

Title “Sandbox” (stylized as s&box), an anticipated follow-up to Garry’s Mod, has been under development since 2015, placing significant emphasis on virtual reality technology using top VR headsets. Initially started in Unreal Engine, the developers later opted for Source 2 for Sandbox, which is the advanced version of Valve’s Source engine and was previously used to create Garry’s Mod. After nearly a decade of anticipation, Sandbox is now available for play.

As an excited fan, I suggest heading over to the Sandbox developer preview site to grab the latest build of our favorite game. Remember, you’ll need your Steam account to access the s&box site. Once you click on the image to join the preview program, magic happens! The game will automatically be added to your Steam library for you to enjoy.

Absolutely, given that we’re dealing with a preliminary version of the game as a developer preview, it’s understandable that there might be some issues. This could include broken, buggy, or even poorly functioning user-created or developer-designed game modes. However, this is also the initial chance for many gamers, myself included, to experience what appears to be the successor of Garry’s Mod after a long wait.

I’m eagerly anticipating that it won’t take much longer for S&Box to become accessible to all. Over two decades, Garry’s Mod has provided me with endless entertainment, and it’s been fascinating to see various generations of gamers embrace this peculiar physics-based sandbox game. If S&Box launches around the 20th anniversary of the original mod, it would truly be a fitting tribute to its enduring legacy.
