As a seasoned gamer with a profound appreciation for both the gaming world and the acting realm, this news of Gary Oldman returning to the British stage has left me absolutely ecstatic! With a career spanning over four decades, Oldman’s performances have graced our screens in iconic films like Darkest Hour, Harry Potter, and Batman. Yet, there is something truly captivating about seeing an accomplished actor perform live on stage.
Acclaimed actor Gary Oldman, who won an Oscar, is set to make a comeback on the UK stage with a performance in Samuel Beckett’s “Krapp’s Last Tape” at the York Theatre Royal in the upcoming spring season.
Actor Oldman, who’s currently shining in the AppleTV+ series “Slow Horses”, is returning to his roots. This is where he started his career 45 years ago, taking the stage at a theater in northern England for Ben Travers’ play “Thark”.
Known for his performances in “Darkest Hour”, the “Harry Potter” series, and Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” trilogy, this esteemed actor is widely regarded as one of the U.K.’s most accomplished figures in film and television.
He has performed on stage in productions such as Romeo and Juliet by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Hamlet, and a version of Cabaret in London. His most recent theater role was nearly four decades back, in 1987 for the London Royal Court’s play Serious Money.
On Wednesday, Paul Crewes, CEO of York Theatre Royal, shared that it was captivating to listen to Gary reminisce about his early career days when he first appeared on the York Theatre Royal stage as a young actor at the beginning of the year.
As we delved into potential projects within this particular setting, it became evident that ‘Krapp’s Last Tape’ was a fitting choice. It brings me immense joy to share that spectators will have the exclusive chance to witness Gary Oldman grace our stage once more in this innovative, fresh rendition.
The production begins previews on April 14 and runs until May 17, 2025.
Samuel Beckett, an Irish playwright and Nobel laureate who passed away in 1989, is widely regarded as one of the most imaginative literary figures of his era. In the play titled “Krapp’s Last Tape“, we follow a man who annually, on his birthday, creates a new recording to ponder over the past year. On his 69th birthday, Krapp, now a solitary individual, prepares himself with a bottle of wine, a banana, and his tape recorder.
Tickets will start at £25 and be made available for public booking on Nov. 16.
