Gears of War: Reloaded – More of a Retread than a Remaster

Gears of War: Reloaded initially sparked much excitement as it marks the game’s debut on PlayStation 5 and Steam for the first time. Despite that, enthusiasts of Xbox Series X and Windows platforms will still appreciate the enhanced visuals. However, it’s important to note that this isn’t a freshly remastered version for Xbox fans.

As a devoted fan, I’ve got to say, even with the fresh tagline, Gears of War: Reloaded feels more like an upgraded 4K iteration of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Now, it’s not that it’s a bad thing per se, but considering Microsoft gave away free copies to those who already owned Ultimate Edition, it seems they recognized the similarities themselves.

Previously, Microsoft and The Coalition announced that the remastered edition was constructed upon the foundation of the Ultimate Edition. Given this information, gamers expected an enhanced and upgraded version of the game with numerous improvements. While it’s satisfying to see the game run at a higher resolution and smoother frame rate, it is somewhat underwhelming for Xbox enthusiasts.

It’s possible that fans wouldn’t have felt as let down if the promotional material hadn’t suggested a completely fresh game. Instead, Microsoft and The Coalition could have simply released an updated version for PS5 and Steam under the Ultimate Edition title. However, they opted to release the Reloaded edition instead, which may have led fans to expect something more than just an update.

It’s clear why fans of PS5 and Steam are eagerly anticipating Gears of War: Reloaded. This is the first time the shooter series has appeared on these consoles, as it hasn’t been on a PlayStation console previously, due to obvious reasons. Interestingly, while Gears 5 and Gears Tactics are accessible on Steam, none of the other games in the series can be found there. One might argue that, technically speaking, the Ultimate Edition is being ported over to Steam, but it’s happening here with Reloaded instead.

In summary, we’re eager to understand how this new release may influence its reception. The original Gears of War remains an excellent game, while the Ultimate Edition was a superb upgrade of it. However, it would have been much appreciated if they were more transparent about the origins of this remastered version.
