As a longtime cinephile who’s witnessed the evolution of cinema since the days of VHS tapes and popcorn-scented air, it’s disheartening to see the shift towards streaming platforms eating away at the traditional theatrical experience. I still remember the thrill of waiting in line for tickets, the anticipation as the lights dimmed, and the communal experience of laughter and tears shared with strangers in a darkened room.
Today’s Hollywood seems to value characters over actors, with some arguing that the classic movie star might be on its last legs. However, it’s difficult not to see a blockbuster potential for any film featuring friends George Clooney and Brad Pitt, slated for release in 2024. So, one may wonder, why isn’t the upcoming movie “Wolfs,” starring this dynamic duo, gracing theater screens?
Initially, it was planned that “Wolfs” would have a wide theatrical release. However, due to recent changes, the film will now be shown in a select few cinemas, briefly, and for just one week. After this brief theater run, the movie will become available on Apple TV+ subscription services.
George Clooney And Brad Pitt Were Expecting A Theatrical Release
Initially, when the first trailer for the film “Wolfs” came out in the spring, there were still significant plans for a cinematic release in theaters. Similar to previous projects like “Napoleon” and “Fly Me to the Moon”, it was intended as a joint venture between Apple and Sony for distribution. The initial trailer hinted that the movie would be shown on IMAX screens as well as standard ones, with an exclusive theater run. George Clooney and Brad Pitt chose to donate part of their earnings towards the cinematic release, as they were keen on this option.
Initially, Apple expressed optimism about a potential sequel for “Wolfs”, but they later opted to postpone its theatrical debut. Instead, the film will be screened in limited theaters for a week, featuring some IMAX screens, and then it will become available on Apple TV+.
In the Venice Film Festival, Clooney discussed various aspects of his film “Wolfs”. He clarified its pay structure, expressed thoughts on withdrawing it from cinemas, and acknowledged that they were all learning how to handle the current movie industry landscape, with a focus on theaters and streaming services.
Why Apple Has Made The Change For Wolfs
The New York Times suggests that Apple won’t heavily promote “Wolfs” in cinemas because its past theatrical releases haven’t fared well financially for the company. Given that Apple is splitting costs and profits with Sony for distribution, as well as sharing box office revenue with cinemas, all of Apple’s big-screen launches have resulted in financial losses for them.
Simultaneously, the film titled “The Instigators“, a recent production on Apple TV+ starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, is said to have attracted approximately 50,000 new subscribers for Apple. It was reported as the most-viewed streaming movie across all platforms during its debut week, although no specific viewer numbers have been disclosed by Apple yet.
If a sequel to the “Wolves” ever materializes, it might find itself released at a time when the film industry has significantly evolved, potentially making a theatrical debut more feasible.
