As a seasoned gamer of the epic saga that is George R.R. Martin‘s universe, I find myself intrigued by the recent turn of events surrounding House of the Dragon. It seems our beloved maester has been weathering a stormy year, one filled with stress and conflict, much like the battles we witness in Westeros.
George R.R. Martin is suggesting he’s about to go “dracarys!” on House of the Dragon.
George R.R. Martin, the creator of “Game of Thrones” and co-creator of “Dragon”, published a thought-provoking post on his blog last Friday, indicating that he will share his regrets about certain aspects of the highly successful show.
Tucked discreetly at the end of a blog post concerning a Santa Fe event, Martin casually mentioned, “I am not eager for the other posts I have to compose, regarding the issues with HOUSE OF THE DRAGON… however, I must do so as well, and I will. But not today.”
Martin expressed on a more intimate note, “This year has been quite tough for me too, filled with stress, anger, disputes, and setbacks. I’ve got some of that to share, and I will, I certainly will… I was off my computer traveling from July 15 to August 15, so there were many things left unsaid.”
The statement stands out because Martin, known for openly endorsing his HBO projects, remained supportive of Game of Thrones even when it deviated from his original work and made decisions that he later expressed disapproval about. However, he continued to praise showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, as well as the series overall.
Martin has consistently applauded the show Dragon, and was especially enthusiastic about the fourth episode of the latest season, claiming it featured the most spectacular dragon fight ever filmed. He excitedly declared, “They truly aced this one!” or alternatively, “Our team really nailed it with this one.”
In the second season of Dragon, viewers expressed criticism due to it feeling incomplete, with the final battle hinted throughout the series never materializing because the season ended after eight episodes instead of the planned ten. The implication being that HBO moved the last two episodes to season three as a means to cut costs.
The series faced additional criticism too. Critics noted that the season’s high-energy action sequences often centered around characters viewers didn’t care for. Both main actresses, Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke, spent most of the season in their castles without contributing much to the storyline. Additionally, fans felt that the season overlooked popular character Daemon, played by Matt Smith. Moreover, some viewers criticized the series for its somber and humorless tone, pointing out that it contrasted with Martin’s books which are filled with dark wit, similar to what was seen in Game of Thrones.
As a devoted fan, I can’t quite tell if any of the points mentioned previously strike a chord with Martin, given his unique vantage point as the world’s creator and executive producer. Unfortunately, HBO has yet to respond to my inquiry for clarification on this matter.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Dragon’s ratings were exceptionally high – the largest for any HBO series since Game of Thrones concluded. However, the second season saw a slight dip compared to the first (contrasting with Game of Thrones which began with relatively low ratings, but increased each subsequent season).
Following the latest finale, co-creator Ryan Condal revealed that the series will conclude during its fourth season, promising a fast-paced start for season three.
“We are building to that event that will happen very shortly in terms of the storytelling, and it should be the biggest thing to date that we’ve we’ve pulled off,” he said. “We just wanted to have the time and the space to do that at a level that is going to excite and satisfy the fans in the way it’s deserved. We also wanted to build some anticipation toward it. So I apologize for the wait, but … with the team that we have together, we’re going to pull off a hell of a win with The Battle of the Gullet.”
